I will be 61 this year...and while I don't have a degree in animal behavior (I do have a 4 year degree and partial on my masters) I have over 30 books on animal behavior I have read and I get two publications a month from whole dog journal and tufts vet school.

I have never had any of my rescue's chew on furniture...not an issue..

I think if someone asks then yes you can give your opinion on this but in this thread NO ONE asked...

I also know a breeder that does not have any of her dogs marking in the house and she believes it is a genetic thing...None of her dogs have to wear a belly band...

hmmmm not sure i have that one as i think i started getting things back in 7/06 after dex got sick with pancreatitis is when i learned this whole new world of groups, yahoo groups and things like this and started learning like crazy - but you can order articles individually though on line about specific topics - I have done that before

I know I posted it on one of the dock threads but it is 10 bucks...and my mind is made up withe issue...just seemed to remember that they felt it might be harmful to the dogs back but wasn't sure...

Oh please...if you have read any of her threads as a member you would know she just wants to make sure nothing is harming her dog...not that it is a dirty digusting habit that needs to be broken. Better yet I will ask her to come here and respond to you..it is really just my opinion that she was asking so no harm came to her dog...

Most people just PM someone when they want one persons opinion.

I appologize for offering advice to someone who asked for it, when it is clearly you whom she was talking to.

But my advice still stands for those who are wanting a second opinion.

You do not have to allow it, it can be stopped just like any other unwanted behavior.

For those of you who want your dogs to do this, It is very simple. Don't correct it.

Just to be clear, I was half joking about getting it to stop. I do believe that humping is natural behavior, and I'm just very lucky that Thor doesn't show any interest (I guess he's a "bottom" :eek:).

The thought of him licking his treasure and then licking my face, yes, I do find that gross, though he licks every other part of his body, so maybe I'm just in denial. Good thing he doesn't mind getting his teeth brushed.

My understanding is that humping is VERY natural. My favorite animal after the yorkie is the dolphin, and I've read that even female dolphins have been observed pleasuring themselves on coral reefs.

One of the funniest advice columns I ever read was from a distraught mother who said she couldn't keep her four-year-old daughter from humping the heck out of their ottoman, even when there was company over. So yes, it comes very naturally to all creatures, great and small. :D

The columnist actually gave what I thought was very good advice, which was to tell the girl that the behavior was okay, but that it was private. Dogs do a lot of things that can potentially be bad behavior, like marking, barking, and humping. I think the key with all of them is not to try to prevent them entirely, but to teach the dogs when it's okay to indulge. They can mark outside, bark while they are playing, and engage in sexual relations, as long as it's a consensual monogamous relationship with an inanimate object. :D

It just occurred to me, as yorkie owners, we don't have to teach our little ones not to sniff crotches. That's probably one I would just outlaw.

I put my dogs in their crates at bed time. What they do in their crates after lights out, I do not know. But I would not allow it in my livingroom. I have only ever had one dog that did it, and that was a female. I merely took away the toy and told her NO. If she went out of my sight and did it, I don't know.

If one does not mind their dog doing this, then fine, but for those who are concerned about it, it can be stopped.

I still wonder if opinons would be different if we had Great Danes and not Yorkies.

I have also read, on this forum, that males can injur themselves and develop infections if their penis gets rubbed on a stuffed toy, blanket etc. And of course if their erection last for more than 4 hours. :D
