| Need Help Does Anyone Else Feed Raw? My minpin has allergies and I cooked for about 5 yrs for her. With our new addition we have decided to do a raw diet in hopes of feeding them healthier and helping my older girls allergies. We went to a natural health food store and talked to a nutritionist there and we have brought home some all organic (no chemicals or drugs) premade patties to try. We simply cut them in half and half again and then feed the girls half in morning and half at night. The ones we are trying the protein base is turkey ..and it has fruits and veggies added. I can feed them more fresh organic veggies and fruits as well. Now what I am wondering is ..if anyone else feeds raw..how to they prepare the food and how much do they feed?? I am a newbie to this but I want to do the best I can for them. I also purchased some flossies (beef tendon) and some ground dried liver that I can sprinkle on thier food. Ohh and some more dried salmon treats, and dried turkey treats(you just give them little bits ..to use a training aid) Any help or advise would be appreciated...a lot! |

| There are tons of members here who feed raw! Most feed pre-made raw that you can buy at pet stores and some feed prey-model raw that you prepare yourself. We feed prey-model raw. If you are interested in learning about PMR, I just posted on this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...iet-bones.html It might help! Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feed pre-made raw (Primal brand) - Wylie gets a total of 4 "nuggets" a day and Marcel gets a total of 2. They also usually get some sort of a chew treat every day too.

| I feed Natures Variety. Both of mine get one medallion twice a day, and they have Merrick kibble available to them as well.

| I am sorry I have not replied before this. We were away. I wanted to thankyou for the comments. The food we are feeding is called Legacy. We started feeding the beef too and they both are doing good on it. Last night they had the turkey and my MinPin was sick in the night and vomited and when I washed her bedding I found in the water trap of the washer quite a few small pieces of bone. I think she gulps her food so fast that she is not chewing them properly. ANY suggestions on slowing that down? Also we were feeding the recommended amount and noticed she was loosing abit of weight..so we upped her portions abit. She tends to be on the lean side and the weight loss was noticeable. The store where we buy the food will deliver to our town so I am thinking of having them bring buffalo with the turkey and beef.Chicken is not an option right now, we are trying to avoid it because suspect it may be something that triggers allergic reaction. Any other suggestions for protein source besides the turkey, beef and buffalo? We also got them some big meaty beef bones and my MinPin loved them. If I give them fresh turkey do you I leave the skin on ..or take it off? 9I noticed Mystique (the minpin) was abit constipated too...but I added a few drops of an Omega 3/6/9 supplement to the food and that seems to have righted itself. Thanks again for your help. Last edited by Furmomma24; 02-07-2010 at 05:05 PM. Reason: spelling errors |

| Max eats BARF Raw patties and Acana kibble. He has his patty in the morning and kibble at night. He seems to like it.

Also, many dogs who experience allergies to chicken have absolutely no problem with raw chicken. It is the most palatable for dogs so it's usually used as a staple in a diet. I would try raw chicken before writing it off completely! At first I cut off all the skin/fat on raw because I thought it might be too much for the dogs to handle. Now I usually leave it on, unless there is an excessive amount. Fat is an important part of any diet so it's totally okay to give. Sometimes pre-made raw has a really high bone content so you will notice some constipation. Canned pumpkin is great for this! Sorry to hear you're having so many problems thus far! Stick with it and hopefully it'll all work out. It's definitely worth the try.

| This is a link to the raw pet food I am feeding Products The food is packaged in frozen patties (like a big hamburger patty). We were suppossed to feed them one patty per day (the two girls got one quarter each, morning and evening meal) I am feeding probably a patty and half daily. I also let them have some fresh veggies and fruits, plus the meaty bones..but those are not daily. I am not too worried about the constipation as the omega 3/6/9 supplement is helping that and it helps with thier coats and skin. I knew about the pumpkin for treating constpation and diareah for dogs but it has to be pure puree with no sugar added. I am not sure where to find that here in winter. Most canned has some form of sugar doesn't it? We are trying here to stick to the diet..I am excited that we may have finally done something that will truly help Mystiques allergies. Will keep you mind if I can think of any other questions. Really appreciate the help..thanks so much!! |

| When we first start out we were feeding natures variety and had some problems with vomiting of bone fragments and some contsipation this was one of the reasons we switch but I think manly it just take there system some time to adjust to the new diet and to start producing the stomach acids.
