Everyone else, where do you find out what shots are required in your states? This sounds horrible! I'm like this with my children too. There are a couple of shots that are optional (but of course reccomended by their pediatrician, no doubt to collect the big bucks) but I absolutely will not let them get! There are way too many side effects (autism??). I can't believe you have to worry about the same nonsense with your pup, too!

I found out by looking online at the animal control website for my area, and then I followed up by asking my vet whom confirmed that there are no laws in my area as far as vaccines go, not even for rabies. I feel so lucky to be able to make my own decisions as far as vaccines go.

The only vaccine required by law in the US is rabies. How often it is given depends on your state. All others are optional, but most groomers, daycares, and vets require some of them, so it would be an individual thing...

I'm on the fence about titers because:
Ellie was vaccinated for a whole bunch of stuff at the same time in 2006 (before I knew not to give so many on one day). In 2007, she was titered for parvo and distemper. Distemper was really low (1:16). "Maybe" that could be explained by her having so many vaccines the year before. Perhaps the distemper didn't take... So we vaccinated for distemper only. In 2008, she was titered for parvo and distemper again. Parvo is still quite high. Her distemper was low again (1:32). Now it went up some, so I'm thinking the vaccine did "take" in 2007 (unless it's a bunch or lab error). Anyway, 1:32 is right on the line of labs telling you to revaccinate. We didn't in 2008, but it loooks like if we go by her titers, it will have to be done every other year and I absolutely do not believe this vaccine is only effective for two years... There is no proof of that. So, in Ellie's case, I think titers could falsely indicate that she needs distemper vaccines way too often. That's JMO.

That is odd as dd only had her 6 mos puppy shots and she is almost 6 and every year she has had enough in her to avoid vaccination - maybe they gave her a huge dose and why she has so many health issues not sure but i have had titers done at cornell, colorado state, dr dodds and antech so it may depend on the lab as well

So sorry to hear about your bad experience. Now that your done with the puppy round I would recommend you ask your Vet about a Titer test. Because we are small breed owners I feel it is very important for all to know about titering. It's a blood test that measeures antibodies which will determine if your pup is in need of certain vaccines. Some vaccines last longer than others and over vacinnating can cause allergies, skin conditions, arthritis and even cancer. I usually have some extra blood drawn at heartworm time for the titer test. As for the 7 in 1 vaccine, I peronally don't think it's the best thing for pup's under 35lb. Small pup's and pup's under 3 years of age are more likely to have a reaction than larger and older pup's. Hope your baby is feeling better

They were done at Colorado State.
The paper with her results says a titer of 1:32 or higher is probable immunity, but the higher the better. I just don't think her distemper titer is going to go too much higher, but I also don't think it is a good idea to give it every other year. So.......... I don't know.

yeah they say you can go every 3 years but i do it every year when i do blood work as a safety precaution. That is wierd as dd distemper and parvo were fine through colorado state and that was done 4 years after shot - again maybe she got a high dose shot or something as i did not know back then about separating them
