The grading chart...if only picking a food was that easy... Dog Food Analysis, maybe slightly better, but still it has a lot of flaws. It's a good place to see ingredient lists all in one place (although it's not updated I don't think), but what about manufacturing practices, where the ingredients come from, etc.? And just because a food gets six stars does not mean a thing. Most of the higher protein foods are rated higher, so we automatically know that the makers of the site like high protein best. Well, I'd like to see some scientific proof that high protein is always the best for all healthy dogs... The makers of some of the five and six star foods also use ethoxyquin. Well, they don't use it themselves; their suppliers do. And foods are automatically "bad" because they contain corn. I really can't agree there. If the preference is grain free, then go for it; but is feeding corn that much worse than other grains??? It is my personal preference to stay away from Iams/Euk because of the animal cruelty videos online. It's also my personal preference to stay away from by products, unnamed meats and fats, ethoxyquin, BHA/BHT, menadione, etc.

Thanks for the info. I think you're right with the opinions. Everyone does have their own opinion and I completely respect that. I'm just afraid of doing something wrong with my little guy. I'm going to do some research and hopefully find a good match. What are you feeding your little one?

| We have had a Yorkshire Terrier for over 5 years now. She has always had skin problems and ear infections. The skin problems included lesions and sometimes sores on you her belly. For years we have been trying to figure out what is causing her conditions. We have always fed her Eukanuba Adult Small Breed with the picture of a Yorkie on it and for treats Eukanuba Healthy Extras Adult Small Breed Treats. We don't believe in changing our dogs food all the time nor letting her have human food. So we always fed her this dog food. Over the years we have tried to figure out what is causing our dogs skin problems, trying different shampoos, trying different dog treats. Thinking she is allergic to something in the back yard, so limiting her time outside. we never thought it could be what she is eating!!!!!! Well 2 months ago our local Petco didn't have your Small breed in stock so we didn't buy it. The next time still not in stock, so didn't buy it. So after BEING OFF this dog food for 2 months now her skin lesions and scabby sores are totally gone! And she hasn't had an ear infection. Eukanuba Adult Small Breed formula is very unhealthy and we are pretty sure caused these conditions in our dog. |

At least you finally figured out the cause of her skin problems. It's unfortunate that companies like Eukanuba are so good at marketing. Eukanuba is such a well-known name and if they make a food specifically for your breed of dog, most people who don't really research will think that surely it is going to be the perfect food. What did you end up switching your yorkie to that cleared up her skin?

| [QUOTE=Ellie May;2951306]I think you're confused because a lot of the food talk on YT is opinion only. If the preference is grain free, then go for it; but is feeding corn that much worse than other grains??? I totally agree...this entire discussion on dog food is like discussing the different religions! MINE is the right one, you should be siding with ME...those over there are nuts, and unvalidated, dont even GO there!......we all have our own preferences! I have a real issue with the implication that ANY food that contains CORN, is "crap". THIS IS NOT FACT, IT IS OPINION AND SHOULD BE INDICATED AS SUCH!!! Another thought....perservatives are used to keep those "funny smells" from occuring in dog food!!! There was a recent post about a dog food that had been recalled because it "smelled funny"...I have NO idea if this particular food utilize a preservative, but I can tell you, there are REAL dangers if preservatives are NOT used in foods. If your dog is not having allergy issues, or GI issues on a particular food, and it is a food that is 100% guaranteed balanced and nutritious by AAFCO, it is not going to do harm to your dog. MORE CONCERN NEEDS TO BE GIVEN TO THE QUALITY MANAGEMENT/QUALITY CONTROL PRACTICES, RATHER THAN IF A FOOD CONTAINS CORN!!!! Check out the dog food recalls....if your dog food has continually been recalled, time and again, they are having a quality control issue....perhaps, something for you to rethink using!
