| So much poop for such a little dog Dunkin is about 11 months old and eats Merrick puppy plate dry food. He seems to like it a lot, and he's been eating that type of food for about two months. The past few weeks, though, he seems to be pooping much more than usual. Maybe 4-5 times a day. He eats less than a cup a day (morning and evening feed time) and he doesn't usually eat treats throughout the day. Could it just be the food that is causing him to poop a lot? Is this much poop okay for a dog that is only 3lbs? Does anyone else have this situation who is using Merrick? |

| My Pixie is on wellness and she is 20 weeks and she poops about 3-4 times a day. She also eats about 3 times a day and about 1/3 cup each time. I pretty much free feed her but that is about what she eats. I would say as long as the poops are not extra large. I did read somewhere that if there poops are real large it could be a symptom that they are not getting the nutrients out of what they eat. I hope someone else posts that knows more about this.

| Hmmm...that does sound like a lot of poo. I'm not very familiar with Merrick's...I tried it once with my crew and they all had gas so bad I took it back. Does it have fillers in it? If so that would be the reason for so much poop. I feed mine Fromm's Surf and Turf and Innova Puppy food and they go twice a day...after breakfast and after supper. I free feed during the day too but they only go in the morning and at night. |

| I did a lot of research, and Merrick seemed to come highly recommended. It's entirely natural and good quality. Some people weren't happy with the high price, but with the small quantity of food he eats, the littlest bag lasts me more than 2 months, so I don't mind the cost. I know that not every dog is the same, so maybe it's not a good fit for him even though it's a good food. I just want to make sure he's getting the nutrients that he needs ... |

| No expert here... just sharing. Zoey is fed Royal Canin 33 Puppy which is not a grocery store brand but not a 5 star either - but is what the breeder was feeding and she seems to do well on it for now. I guess the nutrients vary by brand because even though she is 5 lbs now (6 1/2 mos old), she is only fed 1/2 cup total per day. I happen to feed her twice a day so she gets 1/4 cup morning and nite. With all that said, Zoey generally poops twice a day. Once in a while only 1 poop a day or 3 times a day tho this is rare.

YT 2000 Club Member | I had my dogs on Merricks for about 3 months and right before I switched to Acana, they started pooping more, they went from 2 to 3 times a day to 5 or 6. Tucker started having accidents in the house again, it was like he couldnt hold it long enough to get outside. It was wierd. Anyways, I took them off it because they had an odd red staining on their mouths, feet, around thier butt, and their eyes teared terrible and it got worse the longer they were on it. I still think its a decent food, good quality ingredients, just didnt work for my dogs.

| I just started Merricks a few days ago. I got the "before grain" one. I heard it was very good and I read great reviews online. Lola poops about 2-3 times a day. I mean it really depends on how much food she gets. Are you sure noone is feeding your baby when your not home or sneaking him treats? WHen she was on raw she pooped once a day and that was it. |

| Max pooped a lot when on Wellness. Since we switched to Nature's Variety Lamb & Oatmeal and Acana (we switch back and forth- variety) his poops are less in amount and frequency. Mickey (puppy) also is doing fine on these 2 foods. I guess some foods just don't do well with some dogs. I would try another food if the amount of poop bothers you.

mine are 5 lbs and eat half a cup a day each. So Less then a cup for a 3 lber is definitely too much I'd say. | |

I agree.. my 2 little ones, 4 pounds and 10 pounds (not so little lol) share a 1/2 cup a day, (they get a full cup when the dish is empty, cuz I free feed, but they only eat half) but I supplement with a little bit of wet in the a.m and a few teapsoons of yogurt (they dont always eat) in the p.m. That does seem like a lot of food for a little one.

| Thanks everyone for your input. Maybe he is eating too much! I use one of those little plastic measuring cups that comes on the top of cold medicine to measure, and I give a scoop each time (that could be much less than a cup total). Some days he has left overs, others not. I will pay closer attention to the exact amount he's getting. It seems like such little amount of food to me! I just can't imagine being so tiny ... |
