| My puppy is coughing? gagging? It wakes him up at night :-( HI....Iam worried about my little puppy "Charlie" He is doing this coughing, gagging, and sometimes he sounds like a little pig....like hes snorting or something. I took him to the vet and he put him on an antibiotic for a respiratory infection. He is done with the medicine and it hasn't gotten any better. If anything it is worse....it's waking him up in the middle of the night, like he is gasping for air. Its really scary. I feel so bad for him. Well, then today, he started gagging again and he spit up white stuff...like mucus stuff....Sorry, I know it sounds gross. Then later on through the day he did it again, only this time it was black. I dont know what to do. Anyone have any ideas what it may be? BTW....he is a yorkie-bichon mix. Thanks for any information :-) Mindy |

| Report that to the vet. Maybe save the mucus and take it in for the vet to look at. I hope he gets better soon. |

| I think it sort of sounds like kennel cough, please bring him back to the vet and get a different anti biotic

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...did the vet give the pup kennel cough vaccine....? If yes, that vaccine can actually *cause* kennel cough, which can takes weeks and even months to get rid of - and you have to be careful it doesn't progress to pneumonia in puppies especially...

Senior Yorkie Talker | My baby boy Ares had the same thing. I took him to the vet rambling about kennel cough, a collapsed Trachea , I mean he had the same symtoms! The vet had given Ares the "pink bubble gum" antibiotics... after a week Ares was fine! I allowed him food and water acess all day, I even offered some baby food (turkey, chicken gerber baby food), he also had a tiny amount of nutri-stat before bed... I mean he was totally pampered! lol I also put a heating pad (like 10 bucks at walmart) on low wrapped in a blankie. He was his stuffed polar bear in his crate as well! I hope your baby gets better soon! Hang in there as a new mommy I'm still learning and YT has all the info/ support you need!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes...but what I mean is...you need to look back at his puppy vaccinations and see if Kennel Cough, aka "Bordatella", was given as one of his vaccines...which many vets give w/out asking. If it was given, then this is very likely Kennel Cough -- which is what the symptoms sound like.

| Oh ok....sorry, I misunderstood. I will look and see. I try to comfort him, but everytime he starts doing that he runs underneath the coffee table because he doesn't want to be bothered. I feel so sorry for him. It really sounds horrible. Especially at night....Im going to do the heating pad trick :-) I think he would love that. I just hope he gets over it soon. Everyone is so helpful here and full of information. I love it!! So friendly too! Thanks everyone :-) |

| you could try soaking his food in warm water so it won't bother his throat. Also steam up the bathroom and let him breath in there for a while. Let us know how he's doing?

| My 10 week old yorkie is doing the exact same thing. My Vet put her on amoxidrops and she's been on them for 5 days without success. Actually she's getting worse. I feel so bad for her when she has the coughing/wheezing/gagging 'fit'. But she seems fine when she's not doing this. She eats and plays normally. |

| Please help yorkie caughing, gagging, sneezing!!!!!!! Hi, I wanted to ask you, how is your puppy doing now? I hope she/he get better.I just have exactly the same situation, I got her at 3 month and then few days later vet gave her the Kennel Cough vaccine,2 days after that she started coughing, and gagging, vet gave her amoxicilin, that only made the symptoms worse, but when she is not coughing, sneezing or gagging she is very energetic and joyful. Then we did the x-ray cause the she couldn't sleep and neither could I, her cough got really bad, and vet said she had bronchitis and gave medication for that..... but it doesn't seem to help either, and I feel so bad for her, I just want her to get better, and nothing helps... How did you help your puppy? I would really appreciate any advice, suggestion, anything. Thank you very much in advance. |

| My puppy came to me with this horrible cough also. I took him to the vet but he didn't detect any congestion. He sounded clear, but after a couple of weeks he was still coughing. I took him back to the vet - so the vet took xrays in order to rule out any problems with his trachea. All looked good. Apparently it was kennel cough - and - it took him about a month to finally stop coughing. So if it is kennel cough - keep with the meds and be patient because it does take a long long time to get over. |
