| Can we talk anal glands? Have you done this? What are the signs that it is time to do this? How often is this done? Do they even need it done? |

| I have never had to do this and I would highly caution you not to do this unless you have a medical reason and a vet or a groomer has shown you how to do this. You can harm your little one.

| One of the main signs is when they scoot across the floor on their bottom. Sometimes they'll whine and look back at their bottom. I would not have them expressed unless the vet says there's a problem.

| draging the bottom. I had to have the vet express my dogs anal glands once. He was draging his bottom on the carpet a lot. He was sick with diareah and not eating at the time though so I definately suggest you see a vet if this is happening. It is not common but can happen to some yorkies. I don't know if it is from illness or it just happens, but it only happened bad when he was sick. Once in a great while he will still drag his bum, but hasn't indicated any discomfort or do it often enough for me to be concerned. Note he showed his discomfort when he was sick. It's funny and very gross when he does it. The look on his face is hillarious! Must be just itchy...Yorkies are so cute even when they are doing the worst things, arent they? |

I never express the glands. To the poster, if your kiddo's glands get clogged...certainly have them expressed...but following that, I'd consider a change of diet to avoid future problems with the glands as that can do the trick.

A word of caution, anal glands can get impacted and infected and in the worst cases - even rupture - if they don't drain on their own when your dog defecates, or else if they aren't expressed manually when they are full. Your vet can show you how to do it so that you don't injure your dog. It's not difficult but most of my friends find it a rather "distasteful" task and prefer to have it done by the vet. My vet does it as a walk-in, I don't need an appointment. I just hand them over to the vet tech, she's back with them in a few minutes and is about $12 each. Groomers can also do it as part of their grooming service, but they usually squeeze from the outside and this method doesn't always drain the glands completely. My yorkie seems particularly sensitive, and will start licking even when the vet tech reports that the glands were not very full. One of the admins at the vet said her dog needs hers done every three weeks. Every dog is different. | |

| I was one who never worried about 'the glands' either...until Bella got an impaction. I couldn't figure out what the slimy thing was on her behind. It was her anal glad! It hurt her sooo much. Had to take her in and put her under anesthesia to open it and clean it out. She had a little drain in for 3 days. Since then, I have learned to express them myself. I figured if the teenage girl at the groomer could do it, I could. Have your vet show you. Once you learn it's not hard. I do it in the bath when I bathe them. Hope this helps...
