I was one who never worried about 'the glands' either...until Bella got an impaction. I couldn't figure out what the slimy thing was on her behind. It was her anal glad! It hurt her sooo much. Had to take her in and put her under anesthesia to open it and clean it out. She had a little drain in for 3 days. Since then, I have learned to express them myself. I figured if the teenage girl at the groomer could do it, I could. Have your vet show you. Once you learn it's not hard. I do it in the bath when I bathe them.
