Toe/foot irritation The last week or so Reggie has been licking his front paw quite a bit. I thought it looked a little odd about a week ago when I looked at it but he seemed to stop licking so I just assumed all was good. Tonight I took another look because he has been licking like crazy today and one of his toe pads (I guess thats what you would call it) is very swollen and instead of just being a plump little black pad it sticks out more and there is a lot of dark and irritated pink showing. Has anyone had anything like this happen? I am thinking maybe allergies because he is allergic to flea bites and he seems to be a sensitive little guy. Any suggestions?

it may have developed into a yeast infection which is common when dogs lick their paws. It becomes damp and is a great place for a yeast infection to develop. I would go see a vet. Is he chewing at it or licking? If he is chewing (and presumably itching) You can give him benedryl. Layla is 7 lbs and gets 1/4 of an adult tablet.

Thanks for the speedy reply. He is kind of licking and chewing and overall obsessing with his foot. I will try the benadryl and get it checked out. I feel bad for him...

I am going to try to post a couple of pictures that I just took of Reggie's foot. You can see the swelling on the right side where it is all pink. He doesn't really like me touching it. Tomorrow I am taking to where my daughter works (groomer) and she will take a look, they think it is allergies, said they have seen it many times. Will see what they say and then probably take him to the vet....poor little guy. Last edited by reggies mom; 11-24-2009 at 07:13 PM.
