I only do it because of Ellie's intestines though; otherwise, I'd likely feed something else. Maybe chicken.

| She is fed 3X daily because 1) smaller meals more often is better for her liver and 2) I can't get enough calories into her in two meals. She does not vomit from an empty stomach. She does regurgitate after eating sometimes though. She has megaesophagus or esophagitis or something going on.

Layla also eats three (sometimes 4, sometimes 2- depends on the day- she rarely eats the amount of calories that she should a day- not a big eater) small meals throughout the day.

| The site is balanceit.com. You would need a code from a vet to get the K, I think, since it's more of an RX product. You may be able to get Balance It L (which is questionable because it contains menadione) without a code. But it isn't going to work because since you can't add the oil, adding the supplement will throw everything off. If you want to use Balance IT L, your vet can go on their vet site and order a low fat recipe for you. But if you don't want to homecook long term, it may be better to try and find a kibble that you are comfortable with or go with your vet's recommendation. Will she eat canned food?

A person can't just decide they want to home cook and "cook" lol.. thats not the end of it. A dog's nutrition is VERY complex. While what you have mention is the BASIS of home cooking- you need to make sure it is balanced and that your dog is getting the proper amount of calories a day- not to mention the proper calcium/phosphorus ration. You need to speak to a nutritionist. Layla has a diet that has been balanced for her needs but that might not be YOUR dogs needs. Layla can probably handle more fat that your dog can. Is there any way you can find a quality low fat kibble until you are able to speak to a nutritionst and have a diet made especially for your dog?

| Dick Van Patten's Natural BalanceŽ Original UltraŽ Reduced Calorie Formula for Dogs This variety of Natural Balance has only %6 fat- which is pretty low. |

| Oh, I forgot. Balance IT does not contain any digestive enzymes or probiotics. It is only a vitamin/mineral supplement. And if you just want to homecook for a few days, you don't need to supplement.

| thanks all for ur input; i picked her u today; she seemed fine for few hrs; but now she seems lethargic. she hasn't eaten since yesterday; the vet said no food or water tonight either; she will be going back tomorrow for more iv fluids. i am afraid she will get sick tonight without any food or water. is that usually the procedure; no food or water for 36hrs? the vet says she has to be on low fat diet; something that is less than 5% fat. THK chicken and turkey are 14% min; so that's out of the question now. the vet wants to put her on royal canin digestive low fat prescription wet food for at least a week or two. i am not sure if it's a good idea to keep her on RC rx food for a long time. i dont think she will eat it anyway; she's really picky. but i have no other choice right now. thanks

Keep an eye on her tonight- watch her gums- if they get white- i would give her something like honey (rubbed on her gums) or yogurt or something- they say not to- but you are the one home with her and you know what she needs- i tend to ignore the no eating drinking- that might for for an 80 lb dog but our babies are small and need something in their belly keep us updated

| If she just came off of the IV and will be going back in the morning, everything should be fine. Your vet said no food or water because her pancreas has to rest and feeding her could trigger it all over again. But like Marci said, you are the one there with her. If you are concerned and don't want to feed her, you can always go to emergency.

| just picked her up from the vet; today was her last day on IV fluids and they tried to feed her; i know she was starving; she ate a bit of the dog food they said; she's doing fine but they sent her home with 4 different meds; not sure if i should use all of them. flagyl or metronidazole, amoxil, pepcid, and carafate. should i give her all of them? i am going to try to feed her the royal canin low fat wet food; but if she doesnt eat should i feed her the tilapia and rice; is tilapia low in fat? i asked the vet and she said she doesnt know much about homemade food or the tilapia fat content.
