which food is best for pancreatitis Other than RX hills, royal canin or Purina ; which good human grade food is best for pancreatitis; that is low in protein and fat ava got really sick yesterday and i had to take her to the hospital; she was vomiting a lot and some blood in the vomit; they did blood test and her amylase enzymes was high; her white blood cell counts was low and i believe her platelets was low too; i don’t have the papers with me; i will get them today when i pick her up from the hospital. she was diagnosed with pancreatitis because of the amylase high levels. so now i don’t know if she has both gastritis and pancreatitis. anyway i spoke to the vet today; ava is on IV fluids and they will prescribe prescription diet for pancreatitis; i am assuming royal canin which can have meal and by products so i am not sure what to do; i had ava on the honest kitchen which is a pretty good food; but sometimes when she doesn’t eat breakfast i give her baby food; and maybe that's what triggered the pancreatitis. so what should i do about the RX diet royal canin; what if she doesn’t eat it; she's very picky eater. any suggestions? should i put her on royal canin for a while and then switch her back to the honest kitchen; or should i give her chicken and rice for a while instead? thanks much |
I'm not sure about the protein and fat % in HK, so I have no idea if she will ever be able to go back to it. Her fat intake will have to be closely monitored for life. Innova Senior or something from the Natural Balance line may work; however, they aren't specifically formulated for this problem and they may not work as well as an rx food. Food that is made for pancreatitis usually contains medium chain triglycerides (MCT) which are better for these dogs. So I would really hesitate to tell you to just go get any low fat food. That said, the rx foods don't always work well either. Another option (which I am not really recommending, but if you have the time and energy...) is to homecook. You could get a recipe from a veterinary nutritionist for this. |
thanks for the info THK chicken formula had 21% protein and 14% fat (min) however THK has a beef formula that is 21% protein and 7.5% fat (min) however i am not sure about the ingredients: Verve Organic rolled rye, USDA beef, organic flaxseed, organic rolled oats, carrots, alfalfa, potatoes, eggs, spinach, apples, cranberries, chicory, parsley, rosemary, vitamins and minerals. i don't have much time to homecook; and i really wouldn't know if this will be sufficient for her. i read the ingredients in the RX diets; and they contain corn, chicken meals, soy.... i really dont think tha'ts healthy. i am so frustrated and don't know what to do. this is her third episode within the 2 years and i can't afford to keep taking her to the hospital. i feel helpless adn don't know what to do. please anyone any suggestions any help? thanks |
I think some people have used one of the HK formulas for this with success, but maybe it wasn't pancreatitis. Hmmm. But as a general recommendations, if you don't want to homecook, I would have to say that an rx diet would be best. I'm sure many people will disagree with me, but pancreatitis can be fatal. I don't like Purina, but the HA's ingredients aren't that bad. I think I ran across another one that didn't look bad (RC maybe), but it probably contains corn. And actually that is fine, but I know some are really against it. |

Meal is just the meat with water removed. It is sometimes preferred over just plain chicken because if the chicken is at the top of an ingredient list, it may only be there because it was weighed with it's water making it falsely heavy. They just remove the water before weighing it to get "meal." I haven't really heard of the R/D being used for this. I think the W/D is. But if you really don't want to, then, maybe look into Natural Balance or something? |
thanks again for ur input; i wish i can get more advice form people with similar experience. i guess for now i have no choice but to use the RX diet; but my only concern is my dog won't eat this food ; she's so spoiled and picky that she probably won't go near it. i was using digestive enzymes with her food; do you think that could be a factor for increasing the amylase level what i find weird is a full blown pancreatitis will have both lipase adn amylase elevated; however she only had her amylase elavated with low WBC count; shouldnt it be high WBC count with inflamation of the pancreas? this is really freaking me out! |
Ellie has had pancreatitis before... The most reliable way to diagnose pancreatitis is with a Spec cPL or if it is seen on ultrasound. |
what is Spec cPL? and what does ellie eat right now; has she had any episodes lately? |

poor thing; ava has gastritis too; that's why i am very hesistant trying new foods and switchign her back and forth what do u homecook for her? it would help me out if i can do that for now. thanks much |
Right now it's fish, sweet potato, and veggies. Her recipe is waaaay too high in fat for most dogs with pancreatitis though. She just happens to do okay with it. And then for some dogs, fat may not have triggered the problem at all and a diet change doesn't always work... |
is fish high in fat? or the sweet potato? what type of fish and veggies do you use; i am assuming you steam them? do you add any supplements? thanks |
