| Stinky! So for the past week, Fergie has had some stinky breath! I noticed that when she opens her mouth, she has 2 sets of canine teeth (I think.) Will these eventually fall out and could that be what the cause of the bad breath is? Or should I take her to the vet? She's 5 1/2 months |

| Yes, the retained baby teeth will give her horrible breathe. It is not fun. I waited until Snickers was over 1 year old to have his last baby canine removed. Some are lucky and all will fall out on their own. Many of us had to have the baby teeth removed. Snickers did not have the best or wrost breathe but now that the last baby tooth is out, his breathe is so sweet I could kiss him on the lips LOL Snick & Viv

The Yorkie breed needs special attention to their oral hygiene health and many need yearly dentals prevent tooth lose and stinky breath. I see you are in the Chicago area and so am I.

| I always thought the double canines looked cool. Scary actually, like meat ripers. Puncture and shred at the same time. As said, they'll fall out. We were lucky and both of ours teeth all fell out naturally. However, between the 2, the male has a bigger problem with tartar build up and bad breath. About 3 months ago when he was nuetered we had his teeth cleaned. His breath was great, no smell at all. 3 months later, he's got some tartar build up starting and his breath isn't great. The female's teeth are clean as a whistle and have never been touched. Genetics play a part as well I think. |

I'm in Tinley Park~about 20 minutes SW of the city. As for the spay, sounds like you have a plan of action! There might be even more that you didn't realize that have been retained but once your vet can get a good look while she is sleeping during the spay he will be able to fully examine her mouth. One of the 2 teeth that Pebbles had removed was right in the FRONT and I had no idea until after her spay that she had a double tooth because it hiding behind her adult tooth. Let me also add that at 5 months they still might come out on their own. My vet required 6 months and 5 lbs prior to spay so that is what we waited for and she did very well. Since you are in the city, PAWS has a spay/neuter program AND PAWS Tinley Park has a program where you can purchase a certificate and there are vets all over the city that are part of this program. This is how I had all of mine plus my foster Truman spayed/neutered with my own vet who I think is wonderful! He even did their teeth for free since they were under for their procedure anyway.
