| Any Yorkies had Eye Surgery??? I posted Maddies Condition in her update thread. But I am trying it here. Basically, she is needing moisture in her eye. They are wanting to do a surgery which re-routes saliva from a saliva gland to her eye. Anyone ever had to do this???? Any other eye surgeries at all???? I would like to talk to someone who has...pppllleeeaaassseee |

| Lady had cherry eye surgery when I first adopted her, but it was very minor. They just fixed her eye during a dental. Have they decided Maddie definitely needs the surgery? I know it is a very long surgery. Lady's ophthalmologist told me it was the longest procedure they do. Will they explain the surgery to you beforehand and answer your questions to reassure you? |

| Teddy had the cataracts removed from his eyes. That doesn't seem like nearly as complicated a surgery as your little one needs tho. If you want to ask me questions about his surgery I would be happy to answer them for you. He had it done almost 2 months ago and is doing wonderfully.

This is what was explainded to me about the surgery. They will shave the left side of her face and through an incision just under the eye, they will connect a duct from a saliva gland to her eye duct. He only mentioned a few drawbacks but did say we would go through it in more detail should we decide to do this. You were right, UT was wonderful. I feel confident they would willingly answer my questions or concerns.

| When Dr. English explained the surgery to me a few years ago, he mentioned an allergy to minerals in the saliva and an overproduction of saliva as the main complications. SURGICAL SOLUTIONS? There is a surgical solution to KCS though it is a delicate procedure in general only done by veterinary ophthalmologists. This is called the Parotid Duct Transposition. The parotid duct is the salivary gland on either side of the facial cheek. It produces saliva which is carried to the mouth via a long duct. This duct can be carefully dissected out and moved so as to deliver saliva over the eye. Saliva actually makes a reasonable substitute for tears though in time some mineral deposits will form on the eye surface and eye drops may be needed to control this. The dog’s eyes will water when he is fed and facial wetting may be objectionable. KCS (Dry Eye) Surgical treatment for KCS: Surgery is also available should medical treatment fail. Surgery involves transposing or moving the duct for the salivary gland that empties into your pet’s mouth to the eye. After this surgery, the eye will be lubricated with saliva instead of tears when your dog salivates. It will be necessary to feed your dog several small meals a day. Surgical treatment is reserved for dogs that do not respond to, and are still not comfortable with medical treatment alone. There are complications associated with this surgery including mineral deposits from the tears that build up on the cornea, skin infections around the eye due to overflow of saliva onto the face, or scarring or closure of the duct after surgery. Most pets continue on some type of topical medication after surgery. What is KCS |

| Wish I could help you but, Abby has the same issue. Her eye doctor has just added the same eye drops (Pilocarpine) to her treatment. He is not so sure she will need the surgery. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the eye drops will do the trick. We go back to see him December 17th. Saying extra prayers every night. I will same some prayers for your little one too.

Did you know that being born with a under developed or no lacrimal gland (tear gland) is genetic in Yorkies?

| Yes, Abby is on Tacrolimus. I have had 3 yorkies in the past 30 years and never knew about this problem. I continue to say extra prayers that something works for her. I read about the surgery and am really not too crazy about that. I also read that the use of Cyclosporin is usually about 85% effective. I am going to ask him about that. I'll have to see what her eye doctor says when we see him next month
