Any tips for getting my puppy to eat more? So we went to visit a new vet this weekend (eye infection, we got some drops and we're doing great) and she let me know that my puppy is a little underweight. She's 8 months old and hasn't lost any weight at all so I was definitely surprised to hear this (She weighs 4.5lbs). Especially since my regular vet has never said anything to me and he's been seeing her since I got her 5 months ago. I'm not sure if she's a picky eater or just has a little tummy but it's always been really hard to get her to eat. We've tried 3 different brands of food in 5 months. I started with Acana Prairie Harvest (grain-free) and had recurring diarrhea. Tried Eukanuba for awhile, did alright with it but I'm not a big fan of the ingredients. Right now we're doing Wellness Small Breed and it seems to be the best for her so far. She eats more of it and no digestive problems! Plus her coat looks and feels great. But she does need to gain some weight and be eating more of it. The vet recommended mixing in some wet food to get her more interested in eating and I tried that yesterday and today. I got a few cans of Wellness and mixed that in. It worked yesterday but not so much today. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Even if you haven't, any advice would be appreciated!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | So, has her appetite been funky since day 1? Does she act okay right after eating and everything...no odd behaviors, right? You can try different flavors of Wellness, but go slow, as it does look like she may be sensitive. You could also get some canned (or fresh) white potatoes or sweet potatoes and mash them, put a bit of salt/butter and give w/ meals - a lot dogs like those carby deals and carbs can stim appetite (plus the smell of carb/butter can be nice). Remember, dogs eat first w/ their nose. Another thing to try is to get the canned Parmesan cheese and sprinkle it on the kibble - it has a nice pungent smell and is attractive to dogs. Good luck and please keep us posted. And welcome to YT !

I have a picky eater, too. In the past I have used chicken and beef broth (no or low salt) over his food to entice him to eat. Also, mine LOVE chicken and turkey baby food. If I want them to eat something - medicine or just eat more that day, I will give them a tablespoon or so. You might try mixing a little in with the kibble. Royal Canin is another brand you might want to try. It has corn in it so you have ot be careful that your little one does not have allergies. One of the features this brand of food has is that is stimulates appetite. I've never tried it - too expensive for me - but I know others that have had good luck with it. It is an expesive choice but it might be worth it if it helps your baby eat. Some people on here don't like it because it has corn but corn doesn't hurt as long as there are no allergies. Good luck!

I've tried the parmesan cheese thing and she'll literally lick it off and leave the food. It does get her over there to check it out though. Update: We're working our way through the canned Wellness flavours as an additive. Because we're almost done the bag of Wellness, I picked up a bag of Salmon Halo. She seems to really like dried salmon treats so we'll give that a shot. I'm also going to try the baby food trick. I'm also looking into raw food if we don't have any luck with the new kibble. I had initially thought it was really expensive and hard to do, but I've found that for how tiny she is, it really wouldn't be. Since I'm currently mixing wet with dry, I'm already spending the same amount. Plus I've found some raw food products that are complete and balanced. Is anyone feeding raw food or has in the past? I've talked to someone that feeds it to their dog, but it's a Boxer and I'm not sure how the diet translates to our little ones. Keep the tips coming, they're very much appreciated!

Really, Parmesan Cheese? I did not know this. Buster is very finicky, the vet does not want him to gain weight because of his LP but you can feel every bone in this baby's body. Maggie is not finicky and will eat whatever I put down. She is a good size at 6 lbs or so (probably more so!!). I will try the Parmesan Cheese.

I tried raw but didn't have any luck. Nick wouldn't touch the stuff and Daisy insisted on carrying the raw food back to her bed. Then it gave her diarrhea. There are many people on here who feed raw and love it, though. I'm sure they can give you some helpful tips.

My dog is a very picky eater. I've tried many different types of food and finally found Fromm that he seems to eat on a regular basis. But what I've done in the past to make him eat. Mix in wet food- it is hard to eat around. Mix in a gravy Add fish oil Add coconut oil Give healthy treats to give more calories, you don't want them to be wasted calories but here are many treats that are good for dogs and will help them eat more.
