Question About Expressing Anal Glands My just-turned three year-old male Yorkie had full anal glands expressed by the vet about ten days ago. This is the first time he has ever had this problem, and we discovered it because he was scooting across the carpet at home. The vet prescribed an antibiotic for seven days to protect him against infection, which we administered. We have now noticed that his anal glands feel full again, and it has only been a week and a half. My question is this: Does anyone know whether having full anal glands becomes a regular problem once they have had to have this done? Or can a Yorkie have this condition once and it rarely ever happens again? Thanks for any information you can give me!

I would call your vet and ask this question. Generally, though, some dogs need their anal glands emptied regularly, some express them on their own. There is lots of information here: Anal Sacs

Anal Glands Thanks for this information. I went to the web site you recommended and got lots of information! I am also planning to make another appointment with the vet for tomorrow for an early follow-up.

| My girls (mom & daughter) needs it expressed at least once every 2 weeks. My boys rarely need it done. My vet taught me how to do it & I also feed them thawed frozen green beans (fiber) mixed in their kibble. It seems to help firm up their stool.

I took my little one for post-operative check and I knew her's needed to be emty. So I asked for that also. My vet showed me how to...and also said it's something you really don't want to do all the time. He said don't emty them if they scoot once. But he never really told me how long. More or less, I think I can figure it out. Well anyway, he said the oil substance can burn them if done all the time.
