| Question on Carrots My baby loves carrots. She is 15 weeks and about 5 pounds. I purchase the carrots sticks that are already sliced and ready to go (packed in water). I give her a piece about 3/4" long twice a day. Is this too much? I recently found out her other mommy was giving her entire sticks at least once a day on top of what I was giving her. I told her I think that is way too much. What do you all think?

| Wow, 5 lbs at only 15 weeks? You may want to back off the carrot thing to a 1/2 a day. They are good for them and help express the anal glands, but too much of a good thing leads to a weight problem.

| 5 lbs at 15 weeks sounds like a nice healthy weight to me. You can't just go by how many pounds a pup weighs, you have to consider structure also. I don't know how many carrots would be too much but I certainly would not consider carrots a fattening food. I don't think you are giving her too much carrot at all, it sounds about right to me. |

| Sounds good to me as well! My 3 love carrots too and they are a good healthy snack/treat.

| I buy whole carrots, peel them and cut them in little bite sized pieces. |

She's a great weight for a dog that is supposed to be 8-10 full grown. At least that's what the vet said when I took her in a couple of weeks ago. I was adamant about not getting the teeny tiny yorkie when looking for a breeder. Anyway, I was concerned about the health issue more than the weight issue. I mentioned her weight so those helping would know how big she is in relation to what levels of vitamins/minerals/ bad stuff she can eat. I didn't think about the soaked in chlorine thing - got it!! I always bought those for me.... so that's what I fed her. We share the container But that little bit of chlorine will not affect me like it will her tiny little body..... OK - stopping at the store on the way home and buying fresh carrots - Thanks, everyone!!

If she's at a healthy weight and is healthy, then I'd let her keep her treats.

Back when I had my Barry who had issues with luxating patellas, carrots were always the #1 treat recommended by my vet (that and green beans) as they're great for treats since they don't contain fat or preservatives and are something you can "more or less" feed all you want without them gaining weight. You're going to have to give more then a logical amount of carrots to a dog before it starts to gain weight for the sole reason you're giving carrots so I wouldn't worry about it. You may need to watch out for how their digestive system handles it though - some dogs get diarrhea with too much carrot, but you'd figure that one out right away. | |

| I'm not sure I know how long the carrots you are talking about are...but I do know my girl LOVES her carrots and I am glad to give them to her. They are a healthy snack and she has to have them mixed in her food at mealtimes too. She eats at least 3-5 baby carrot sticks a day. She is 2 and weighs 12 lbs. Shes a healthy girl.
