| Feedding How often should a yorkie be fed and given water? I feed my yorkie twice a day. Is that enough? For potty training purposes when should I cut off her water and food? Thanks, |

| how old is your yorkie? as a puppy, twice a day is not enough. as a puppy, my yorkie ate 3 times a day and as an adult, only 2 times. some treats inbetween. i never took her water away.

| We fed ours as a puppy 3-4 times a day but our adults only eat twice a day. It all depends on their age and weight - I would probably still feed an adult 3 times a day if it were tiny.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Roxy was free fed when a young pup. She only ate 2-3 pieces at a time. After she was older (maybe 6-7 mo old) I feed her twice a day & still do. She does very well.

| She is 5 months old. I use to feed her three times a day when she was younger, but now she won't eat as much. Thanks for the info. |

| My puppy is 8 months old and she gets fed twice a day with treats in between. She is putting on weight and growing, so twice is enough for her. She also stopped wanting to eat three times, so we went to two meals a day. If she doesn't want to eat that much anymore, two meals should be fine. Just check that the puppy is growing and putting on weight.

But also remember that they have appetites, just like we do. On days when he is more active, he will want to eat more and on lazy days, he will eat less. Heat and cold also plays a part. It takes the body more energy to keep the temperature up than down. So, on hot days they may not want to eat as much and on cold days, they will always seem hungry. It just has to do with energy requirements. You don't have to worry so much about the food though. A dog will eat if he is hungry. Always. That is the way they are programmed. However, if he is losing weight and lacks energy, you need to have him checked out by a vet. So, weigh him today and weigh him again next week (you are probably weighing him anyway) and compare the results. He should have put on weight, but I am not sure how much. Maybe someone else here knows. If he loses weight, take him to the vet. If he puts on weight, perform a little happy dance and stop worrying

My Lil Man! Donating Member | I take Gizmo's daily feeding amount and cut it in half...I give him half in the morning and the other half at night. He free feeds so I could prob just give him all of it but i dont want him to decide to eat it all early and then be hungry later so I break it up. Plus I feel it will cut back on the chance of him becoming overweight. (My mother had a dog that she let free feed the whole serving thru out the day and the furbaby would finish it early and beg for more in the afternoon and she became a tad bit overweight overtime) As for water I leave his water down all the time. For potty training I have a crate he stays in when I am not home and when I come home I let him out and take him straight to pee pee pad where we wait until he does his business and then he gets a treat! |

| Shay will be 8 months on the 28th of this month, and his weight is staying pretty steady..1.9... I have been mixing canned pro plan for puppies, with pro plan (dry)for puppies xs mix..I do this cause we were having issues with constipation on just the dry, and vet wants him on the dry for his teeth, so with mixing everything is so much better..I feed him in the morning....then in late afternoon...I usually leave a lil dry out in case he gets hungry, and wants a bite, since he is so lil...and water ALWAYS out, I have one hanging in kennel and the other is by his food dish.. He ate awsome this morning, and was dancing as I was making his dinner, but he hasnt touched it..uggggg! One question how long can the canned stay out? it will get bad I would think after an hour, I would think.... So sound good? |

| I just looked up Pro Plan on dogfoodanalysis.com and according to them, it is a one-star food. So, it isn't very good. I would recommend looking for a five or six star food. You can go to the website I mentioned above and see which foods are the best. With such small little bodies, yorkies need optimum nutrition. Like I said in an earlier post, we recently switched to homecooking and all our eating problems disappeared. I fed my three-year old Science Plan for the first year and only later discovered that it wasn't a good food. I feel really bad now for giving him that kibble exclusively for so long. No wonder he didn't want to eat. Anyway, maybe look into another food, but otherwise it sounds like you have things under control.
