| Innova causing extremely hard stool I am currently trying to switch my dogs from Royal Canin to Innova and after 4 weeks they have developed extremely hard stools. Today both dogs are leaving what look like "rabbit droppings" on the wee wee pads. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem with Innova?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Sounds like they may need more water - protein does require more water to process and since you're switching to a bit more protein, this could be why. Do you have water available at all times or do you limit it? Or, their bodies could still be adjusting - poops are usually smaller and harder w/ grain free diets - but not really like rabbit turds. Do they seem like they're straining too much?

| Is this the regular 24% protein Innova or is it Evo? Thsi happened to Ellie on an rx diet, but her stool was formed...just very hard. I ended up giving pumpkin with it for three weeks and then decided against the food. Pumpkin does work, but then they are dependent on it which isn't a lot of fun. If it continues, I would look into other foods.

| I experienced that w/Apple when she was on Innova (btw, I think Innova is a wonderful food)...I started giving her a few raw organic spinach leaves, or a few cooked green beans or a slice or two of organic apple...A little fruit and vegetables really help w/getting everything moving...Just trying adding these things a little at a time 'till you see what works best for your babies...Apple isn't a big water drinker...And just like you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make'em drink, well, same goes w/yorkies lol...so you'll just have to get the water in through fruits and veges... |

| Thank you all for answering. I didn't realize that Innova Evo was so hard on their systems. I thought I was doing the best thing, even tho they were both thriving on the Royal Canin I decided to try and give them what I believed, after reading posts on YT, to be the best food. I put them back on Royal Canin over the weekend and their poopy is going back to normal already. thanks again for the input. this forum is such a wonderful source of information and support. I only wish I had known about it with my last yorkie. He would have had a much healthier life if I had been better informed.

| I've heard different things about protein for yorkies. Some swear high protein is the best but others say it is not good for them. Since I didn't know for sure, I went with a food with a normal protein level instead of high protein. I feed Innova but not EVO. I feed the regular puppy food which has 28% protein. Both my yorkies are under a year. The Innova adult food only has 23% I believe. If you wanted a higher quality food, you might try the regular Innova. I know Royal Canin uses a lot of corn in their foods which is def. not good for our little guys. The corn can cause skin problems and allergies. BUT the important thing is to find what works for you and your baby! BTW - I was able to get samples of the regular Innova food prior to purchasing a bag. If you can't get samples, I know they offer a really small bag to buy - I think it is only about 2 pounds and should be around $5. Good luck! |
