| Pet Insurance and Collapsing Trachea Questions I have, for a long time now, had a gut feeling that my baby has a collapsing trachea. Until the past few days it has not been severe episodes but lately they have gotten bad so I think she is going to have to have medical intervention. Usally, the wheezing and honking happens when she is hyper and excited so keeping her clam was usally a fine remedy but last night she wheezed all night. It has not been officially diagnosed as CT, but I just have that mommy instinct. Knowing this, I know if it comes to surgery that is costly so I am thinking I should get pet insurance. Will it be okay if they find out I am getting it because I think she is sick? What is the best kind to get? Please let me know what you think about the insurance and any experience with CT would also be veryyyy appreciated. Thanks!

| Pet Insurance companies require all the current records from the vet...You have to be free of symptoms for 30 days, before the insurance will pay...I'm so sorry about your little one...I hope it's just allergies.... |

| I'm sorry, I don't know much about collapsing trachea. I just signed up 3 of mine for pet insurance myself, so I hope it works out well. After a lot of research, I chose Embrace pet insurance. Just google them and see how their coverage sounds to you. Good luck!

| I know the feeling that you are having. At first I just thought Mandie was choking, but when I took her to the vet, he told us she had a mild collapsed trachea. He didn't go into much detail but just told us to give her a teaspoon of hydrocodone elixer when she is having the "attacks". So far this has seemed to help. I've never looked into pet insurance, since the vet I go to is pretty reasonable in prices.. Hope everthing works out!

| I can't say for sure, but I know that most insurances won't cover a known issue at that time insurance is written. IOW, if you would have had insurance on her all along and THEN found out she had CT, it probably would have been covered. But placing insurance now and expecting them to cover it is probably not going to happen. It's kinda like wrecking your car and then getting full coverage and expecting them to cover the damage that had already happened ... I would investigate different insurances and see what the waiting period is. You may have to wait anywhere from 6-18 months for a pre-existing condition to be covered, if at all. Is there any chance that it's just reverse sneezing, or perhaps an allergy that's getting worse at this time of year? Here's hoping it's something less than CT ... Best wishes to you both. |

| PLEASE be careful about considering the surgery. From what I have read about the surgery and the success rates I really would not put mine through that. I have a foster with CT and he is on a medication regimin that is keeping him stable. He went through a terrible time back in July. After three different antibiotics (the one that we got the best results with was Doxycycline) and the addition of Theodur and Lomotil he improved. He also is on Temaril P. He still has symptoms but much less than he did. He just needs to be kept cool and quiet. When their symptoms get worse, often it is due to a respiratory infection. Pups with CT are more at risk for infections due to the fact there is not a great air exchange. An antibiotic often is the answer! Also....with regards to pet insurance....they do not cover genetic problems!

Once Ozzy's symptoms got really bad, and were present at all times (we had many sleepless nights), we had to get into other medications.

My furkids Donating Member | Sorry to hear about you furry little one. I have pet insurance...they will NOT cover any pre-existing conditions. (at least VPI won't) My girls will make the honking, chocking sound from time to time when they get excited...it's called reverse sneezing and is not harmful. Maybe this is what it is? Hope everything turns out ok for you!

| Many people confuse reverse sneeze and CT. The honking that is done with a CT is not present in a reverse sneeze. Once you actually "hear" a pup with CT and that classic honking sound, you know that is what it is! It really does sound like a goose. With reverse sneeze, there is a lot of snorting being done.

| Linda, I know you have a little foster with bad CT. Are his attacks constant throughout the day, or do they happen more at one time than another? Tate has begun waking up at night making a noise & I can't identifiy it. He only makes it for one or two breaths (beathing in, I think) so it doesn't last long at all. I just don't like it & don't know why he does it.

| I am so so sorry about your baby. I hope it isn't CT. Prince has Ct, and has had it for about 6 months. He was diagnosed when he was a little over 5 yrs. Your puppy has to have an x-ray to know for sure. CT and reverse sneezing are quite different. When you yorkie is having a CT attack, it's sort of like have a severe asthma attack or emphysema. There is a lot of wheezing during inhaling...sometimes their tongue and / or gums will turn blue. We also have had many sleepless nights and have lost days from work. Prince is taking Temaril P (strict directions) and Aminophilline (as needed). He pretty much takes 1/4 tablet of Aminophilline every morning and night. When he gets really bad we start him on the Temaril P. Often, at night, we will hear him making wheezing noises. It's hard to tell if he is snoring or wheezing sometimes. Trying to keep a yorkie calm is tough. When we leave for work, we leave the tv on to drown out outside noises and keep the blinds tilted so he can't see a lot of outside activity. You know how "on-guard" yorkies are, so you can only do so much. Prince has a severe case of CT and after speaking to the vet and reading several books and articles online, we still don't know if we would opt for surgery. It isn't guaranteed to improve the condition. Because we live in the pollen capital of the world, (Georgia) I have to be careful about the time he spends outside, and about the amount of exercise. I don't know anything about pet insurance, so I would go with the advice of the other posters. I wish you and your baby well.

| Hii, I currently have Trupanion Pet Insurance | Pet Health Insurance for your Dog or Cat so if I were you, I would take a look at their website! I'm not a hundred percent sure if they are able to cover you because I think they might view it as a pre-existing condition but you can call them and double check. I think it would be very wise if I were you to get insurance for your yorkie! It will help out with future vet bills! |
