| Snickers' 1 year Vet Visit-Need Advise!! Good Morning Everyone, I've searched the forum about this, but am still unsure. I'm about to schedule Snick's 1 year vet visit and need advise for the vaccinations needed. The vet is saying Snick is going to get his Bordetella and Gardia vaccine. Is this correct? Does he need Parvo at this time or any other? He is not getting Rabies since he got them last year and I believe he got the 3 year type. Please advise. We also plan to have his tooth pulled (1 that has not fallen out) and also get bloodwork done to be sure his raw diet suits him. I would love feedback. Thanks- Snick & Viv

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I don't get bordatella or Giardia vax. The giardia vax isn't really considered very effective. I don't bring my guys to get groomed or to dog parks, so I don't get bordatella. If these are his "1 year puppy booster shots" - then you'd usually get the Rabies booster (if he had his 1st rabies puppy shot, like at 6mths old or whatev), Distemper, Parvo. Don't get the rabies on the same day as the other shots. If he was an adult last year, and got the 3 yr Rabies, and your state law is every 3yrs, then he doesn't need the rabies. Also, if he was an adult last year, then he may not need dist/parvo either....so...how old is he again?

| Hi Ann...thanks, I was hoping you & Ellie May would comment. Snickers is 1 year and 3 months old. Since his last set of shots occurred when he was 3 months (last year-a puppy) we are due for shots. I don't take Snick to get groomed either nor do I take him to dog parks. Let me know what you think. -Snick & Viv

Then, you'd ask for DHP or DHPP - this is the Distemper/Hepatitis/Parvo/Paravinfluenza combo booster. Make sure they don't give Lepto or Corona. If it were me, I would not get bordatella or giardia either - the bordatella is not needed for Snicks bc of what you say above.

| Ann...thank you so much. Why would the vet tell us to get Bordetella and Giardia then? I don't understand....is this a money making gimic? Hmph...are they going to call us in 2 months and tell us then that Snick needs his DHP? Ugh! -Vivian

As for DHPP, they'll probably remind you based upon the date of his last DHPP shot as a pup.

| Jackson's going to need his 1 year visit soon too. He will be 1 year old in a week! He was a little late on his Rabies shot though and didn't get it until he was 7 months old. So does this mean I can wait 1 year from the time he got his rabies? He got DHPP (w/ Lepto one time, never again, he had a reaction!) obviously between 8-16 weeks old.

Dogs that are due for their 1 year old vaccines will get them not when they turn 1 year old but 1 year from when the last vaccine was given. The last distemper vaccine is given usually at 16 weeks. ex: morgan got her 3rd puppy distemper on 8/3/06 which is good for a year. The next year she got her yearly distemper on 8/10/07. In 2008 i gave her 1/2 of the distemper vaccine in the beginning of august. That is the last distemper vaccine i gave her. i'm not giving anymore. Oh, and the distemper combos i gave her were DAPP (distemper, adenvovirus, parvo, and parainfluenza). When she was a puppy she got her rabies vaccine on 8/22/06. That vaccine was good for a year even tho technically it is the same vaccine that is good for 3 years. Then on 8/22/07 she got her rabies vaccine again which is good for 3 years. so in 2010 she will be due for another one. i'm not sure what i'm going to do about that tho. she does have liver problems so i'll have to talk to her vet about our vaccine plan. Distemper and Rabies are the only vaccine i would give my dog given the area i live in. You need to check with your vet to see if Lepto is prevalent if your area. Corona should never be given to a small dog. And i don't like the giardia vaccine either. the bordatella vaccine is only necessary if your dog frequents the kennel or day care but even then it doesn't protect them 100% against the virus.

| I agree with Ann. Rabies and DHP as pup and then one year booster. Schedule of your choice after that (except rabies every 3 years). Bordatella is going to be necessary if you uses a groomer, board, or if your vet hospital has rules about it. Otherwise it's your choice. IMO, there is no reason that giardia should be given in a case like this. The same goes for corona. Lepto, if you are going to get it, I'd do it as a single separately. Some vets around here give it and some don't. While I'm not saying you should or should not give it, it is a concern in the SE Michigan area.

| There aren't really a lot of good reasons to give giardia, especially to a little Yorkie. If you think your vet is just trying to make money off of you, you can always switch.
