| Foot Chewing Hi, My female yorkie, Bella, is always chewing on her feet. Can anyone tell me why she is doing this? Could it be that her nails are too long, or is she just insecure? |

| Prince does the same thing, after he eats. I don't know if it's a habit or allegy, but bsed on the responses I got, it sounds as if it's a habit.

| But it is also the classic sign of a food allergy.

| My Pixie gently chews/sucks on her back foot when she is tired and sleepy at night...its so adorable! its like a comfort thing i think...she doesn't seem to be nibbling at it like its an irritation.

| It could be a number of things, including allergies, irritation from nails that are too long, something caught between the pads of the feet, boredom ... yada, yada, yada. If you have checked her feet and in between her pads and you don't see anything that may be irritating her, she may just be bored. |

| sounds A LOT like food allergies. If there is corn, wheat or chicken listed in her food ingredients- those are the usual suspects. She should be changed to a food that does not include those things as she can develop a yeast infection in between her toes from all the chewing. |

Chicken meal, rice, corn gluten meal, chicken fat, dried egg powder, brown rice, dried beet pulp (sugar removed), natural flavors, wheat gluten, MANY dogs on here have been on Royal Canin and have had allergies due to the corn. I would change her food- chicken is a huge allergen- my dog is VERY allergic to it- she has an instant reaction to it when she eats chicken- chewing on her feet.

| I'd be happy to Natural Balance has many allergy formulas. It is somewhat a rule of thumb that if dogs are sensitive to one allergen they might be sensitive to the others (ie- Layla can't do chicken- she also can't do eggs, corn or wheat or cheese actually). Orijen is also a good food with no corn or wheat or chicken. Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Canidae, Wellness and Fromms are all great foods. Just depends on what you have available to you. |

| be sure to make the transition slowly- and it can take up to 3 months until you notice the itching stop so don't decide after a month that the food isn't working. If her itching is out of control- you can give her Benadryl. Layla is on it right now for seasonal allergies. She is 7lbs. I buy the 25mg tablets, cut them into 4 and she get 1/4 of a pill every 3-4 hours or as needed. Benadryl can have the side affect of making your dog drowsy but really take the itch away which can be helpful while you are making the transition. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | How long has this been going on? What time of year did it start? Paw licking/chewing is usually a sign of allergies; most dogs' allergies are environmental (90%), while some are from food (10%). You can check pollen.com to see pollens in your area.

I also live in an area which has a high pollen count and I myself suffer from allergies. But, at the end of this month we are moving to Florida. I've heard that there is a problem with heartworm there, so I have already given them their heartworm medication and have enough to last until I find a vet there.
