Our guy was up all night rolling around on the rug scratching himself. He started doing this last night before bed and could not sit still because he was itchy.
What could this be? We don't see fleas, and we gave him a bath.

My puppy does the same thing every time I give him a bath it is really cute when he does that, I would not worry about it they all do it. I think it's their way of drying off.

it could be anything, maybe he got bite by a bug and is trying to scratch it or maybe he is having an allergic reaction to the food he is on or he could be just having a good time..

It's not the bath, he always does rub on the carpet after baths, but this was ALL NIGHt and he was scratching himself with his legs. I am just worried it is allergies.

Like hugz4all4 said, it could be a number of things. If it suddenly just started, unless you've changed food, I would think it's caused by something else. Have you changed laundry detergent/softener, shampoo, lotions? Are you lighting candles now that you haven't before? Different treats? And it could always just be airborne allergies.

It's about time for the Fall Allergy season to start, so it could be something in the air that's causing it. I know you can give childrens Benedryl, but call your vet to get the correct dosage. Poor baby, nothings worse then being itchy all over. I've gotten some shampoo from the vet called Relief that has helped some. Also Aveeno makes an oatmeal based bath powder that you can soak him in to help temporarily relieve the itching.

What type of shampoo did you bathe him with? A lot of dogs with allergies are very sensitive to oatmeal shampoos, so it could be your shampoo that's bothering him.

Hi. Sounds like you bathed him because he was itchy? If you walk him outside in areas frequented by any kind of wildlife, he could have picked up sarcoptic mange mites. I would switch to Revolution heartworm treatment (unless you already use it) as it kills these mites also. Can see improvement within 24 hours of application. If that doesn't help, then I would look at possible allergens.

How old is he?
Did you change food? What are you feeding?
Was he recently around other puppies?
Did you just have a lot of wind/storm in your area?

His age is important because a young pup doesn't develop food allergies, but as they get older, they can develop an allergy to a food that they eaten all their lives. Corn may be the cause of itching for those dogs who have allergies, and many dog foods contain corn, so you might want to check this. Bathing can also be a cause, it's important to use a dog shampoo, and rinse thoroughly, human shampoos have a different pH, and even human baby shampoos can dry out the skin too much. Joey's breeder also advised me to use a good conditioner after shampooing; this conditions the skin as well as the hair. I would call the vet, and maybe he would recommend something, like benadryl. The problem with excessive itching is that it can cause more itching and secondary infections, so you want to get this in check ASAP.

Oh my gosh, I know exactly what you are going through and what you are hearing in the middle of the night..all the cries and shrieks..

This happens to my yorkie every year this time. I usually have to start his allergy meds, Temaril P, but he is not on it the whole summer. Usually if I have bathed him too often (if I had to) or when there is a weather change he gets this reaction. Try to get Temaril from your vet, and dont wash him with shampoo next few times you bathe him, so that his oils remain on his coat. And I even had to get Reggie en e-collar this weekend beacuse he was scratching so bad he gave himself a hotspot. The ecollar is not bad at all, like a lampshade or cone is. Its this cute little "doughnut" shaped thing that he doesnt mind wearing- its like he is walking around with a little pillow

. Its so weird, he loves it! I have been coming home from work and spraying his aloe vera on, with the ecollar so he cant scratch and itch, the aloe has a chance to sink in, and he has been sleeping much better the last couple nights.

I think in this case I would go to the vet today if it hasn't stopped.
It could be any of the things listed above, but unless you just changed shampoo or the like and know exactly what is going on and how to fix it, the vet needs to get him some relief.

What parts of his body seemed to be the itchiest?

what type of food are you feeding; my dog was itching all the time; however when i took her off the dog food and put her on bland diet (chicken and rice) the itching stopped completely; so it could be the food or what's in the food.

I just had this happen to my furbaby please read the thread : Blister or pimple like bumps all over. It also talks about allergy skin, and itching.
I did the Chamomile Tea and it work , so far so good and no med.

omg,Leo is doing the same thing.He has a red pimple/bump and he scratches a lot.no idea where it came from
