| Question about treats My cousin gave me some Robbie Dawg Real Brooklyn Pizza treats for my dog. I was reading the ingredients and don't think it is OK for dogs. What do you all think, can my Yorkie eat it? Here are the ingredients: organic oat flour, organic brown rice flour, organic romano cheese, organic sunflower oil, organic tomato powder and organic garlic powder.

From everything I've read, there are huge arguments to both those ingredients. Tomatoes are actually said to be safe - all research and scientific material says that its the plant thats toxic & not the fruit. (Diet - Treats and Snacks look further down the page @ the Veggie Snacks question) Garlic is also one of those as well. Small amounts of garlic are not harmful (its in large amounts that it is poisonous since it causes toxicity.) Small amounts of garlic in many circles is actually seen as healthy. People have been giving their dogs garlic pills for quite a while in many circles (long before we came up with topical flea treatments). Too much of it does cause blood issues, but you're not feeding it that way or giving too much garlic as a way to combat fleas. You're fine. If you're going to give them as treats you're fine. I wouldn't feed them in large amounts though, simply because they not only do have some garlic powder but because they have Romano cheese as the 3rd ingredient and that's a lot of sodium! | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Its ok for dogs to have garlic in the small amounts found in foods and treats, It's on the poisonous list because dogs have been known to eat a whole bottle of garlic powder, and if a human did this we would probably get sick as well. Since a large amount has been found to make dogs sick, it's on the list, and this confuses many people. Organic flour isn't any more nutritious than regular flour it just means that natural methods such as cow manure was used to fertilize, instead of man-made methods, where they combine nitrogen, phosphate, and potash the same ingredients found in manure and make a commercial fertilizer such as Miracle Grow. Also no pesticides are used, and some people believe this is better for the environment, but nothing has said it's better for you. Rice flour isn't particularly nutritious, I don't know about oat flour, but it's not necessarily a bad food. I think whole grains are healthier. I like to use either liver treats, I make myself, or frozen thawed green beans, I think these are more nutritious than anything you can buy that's especially made for dogs. Dog treats are usually very costly for the amount you get too. Here's a list of dangerous foods, tomatoes aren't on the list. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...oods-dogs.html

| I love the Robbie Dawg treats!!! We got some of the Turkey Sausage & Romano Cheese. I love the size of them and they break into pieces very easily. All organic as well!!!!! Garlic and tomato powder in small amounts are fine.....
