| bringing home new puppy, who's eating S.D. I don't get it! So may breeders start off by feeding their puppies Science Diet i am bringing home a new baby who's been eating this crap. I'd like get her off of this stuff ASAP. I haveto do it gradually right? mix in new puppy kibble with S.D. for a while? How long should I do this? I do not want to make her sick! Or should I wait a week until she settles down in her new home, before trying to change her food? What is the best way to keep the dog's food bowls separated? I free feed Suzi, and wll want to do the same for this new baby. I am bringing her home tomorrow! I am going to of course buy a food and water bowl just for her. I have never had two dogs before. I am looking forward to it !

| Congrats on bringing the new puppy home. I would keep the diet the same for about a week and then gradually change. First day 75% SD and 25% new food. Second day 50/50%. Third day, 25% SD and 75% new food. And then just new food. I am not sure if the timeline for gradually changing the foods is correct, but the amounts are. Great for you for changing her to a better food. How are you planning on introducing them? I would suggest taking them for a walk. When they are tired out, just walk them into the house or car. A few other tips with having two dogs: Don't get upset if Suzi snaps and snarls at the new puppy. This is just her way to teach the pup her manners. Pick up all Suzi's toys before the pup comes home. Gradually introduce these toys again, starting with the least exciting toy first. And remember that dogs have no sense of ownership, so you may find that they sleep in each other's bed, eat from each other's bowls, play with each other's toys, etc. And spend a lot of one-on-one time with the puppy. She will automatically bond with Suzi because they speak the same language, but you need to spend a lot of time with the pup to bond with her. Good luck! Post pics soon and keep us updated on the cute little Shih Tzu.

| Congrats on your new baby!! I would definintely wait a week before switching foods so your new baby can settle down a bit. I think I took about a week when switching foods. 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 - 2 days each, then 100% new food. You may have to feed each dog individually until your new baby is on her new food. Otherwise Suzi will be eating the puppy's food, and the puppy will be eating Suzi's food! I don't know what food you'd like to feed your dogs, but an all life stages kibble may work the best for you to free feed both. Congrats, and don't forget to post pictures of your new baby when you get her!!! |

| Thank you both for your excellent replies! I feed Suzi By Nature. It does have a puppy kibble that she use to eat I am planning on switching the new pup over gradually after a week . I also feed Suzi the canned version too, and it is rated a 6 on the list ! Shih tzu's are prone to weight gain, so I will have to be careful with my new wee one. The canned is very high in protein, so I am thinking it still can be good for my new baby at least one feeding. My new pup is going to be bigger then Suzi as she grows. but, I guess that is ok! Shih Tzu's are so sweet and good natured . I am hoping those two will be the best of friends ! Suzi is young , and she is a super loving little Yorkie towards people. However, she is timid around dogs! We have a neighbor Chi, who is very tiny, about 3lbs, who bully's my girl! All this dog has to do is yap, and Suzi is so scared! If Suzi is allowed to meet anther dog on mutal grounds she is fine .She likes a standard sized mini Snouzer pretty well. This dog is huge compared to her! Suzi has always been the center of attention though! I just do not know how she is going to take it with a little fur ball coming home on her pad! i know that I have plenty of love to give both dogs!
