| Is my bitch in season? My 9 year old yorkshire terrier is swollen and would allow my stud dog to mate her, but she has not lost any blood. She is a dominant bitch and she is furious that my 16 month yorkie is having her first season. Is she experiencing a "silent heat"? Can a bitch get pregnant during a "silent heat"? I have my stud dog in a secure room away from the girls. Any help greatly appreciated. |

| It may be a silent heat and yes, she can get pregnant.

| Wow hon, I hope what I read was just a typo. Did you REALLY mean NINE YEARS OLD? That is WAY too old for a bitch to whelp puppies.

| But then the typo would be for a 9 month old which isn't better ~ hmmm... I am thinking it is 9 year old thought because of the dominance issues

| I took it as the stud is interested but in another home not being allowed... To the original poster, it may be in your girl's best interest to be spayed to avoid the possibility of pyometra.

| Yes, she is 9 years old. She is in a secure room and will not be mated to my stud dog, she is too old to have puppies. And because she has developed a bad heart murmur I do not want to risk an operation havng her spayed. All I was hoping for was some information why she was swollen but not bleeding. |

| Sorry Karen, the way it was posted, made it sound like maybe you were going to breed her. Yes, she could be in heat, and it's possible you missed her bleeding. Some dogs will keep themselves so clean that you never do see blood. |
