| How Much Food and How Often? I posted this on the Health and Diet forum too, but thought I might get more responses on here. My 5.5 month old Yorkie eats 1/4 cup of dry food 2x a day. She is about 5 lbs. She eats all of her food and is a good eater. However, she is still kind of skinny. She does have a super short haircut, which may account for her looking skinny. I've tried to give her more than a 1/4 cup of food at a time, but she won't eat more than that. Should I be concerned or not?

| I think that is a normal amount My little furkids eat about that in dry food too. But Bella our 19 month old looks very skinny also, compared to 7 month old Luigi. He is short and squat, she is tall and thin. So I added 1/2 inch of Natural Balance Beef roll each to there diet to get a little weight on Bella 9giving it just to Bella wouldn't work Luigi would have food fits if I excluded him). Well she is still thin but Luigi is now a little pudge ball. |

| Coral is about 5.5 months also. She eats 1/2 to 3/4 cups a day and weighs 4.6. I thought she was skinny, but the vet says she is fine as long as she is eating.

| Ziggy is two and gets 1/4 cup 2x a day. He is 15 pounds (big all over, not fat) and the vet says I should go down to 1/5 cup 2x a day. Doesn't seem like much food.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | You can look up the portion size suggested on the bag of food. It sounds like the correct portion to me.

| My 14 month old male eats 1/4 cup morning and night. He weighs 6 pounds. We rotate between Innova and Canidae. He has to have a spoonful of something "tasty" mixed in with the dogfood to make him eat the dry food. I rotate with chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, tuna, tuna water, ground beef, just whatever I have. It's a very tiny amount but without the people food mixed in, he won't eat plain dry food. He also usually gets about two treats a day.

| I guess I am wrong, because I do not measure out the canned food I give to Suzi. I also give her Kibble and free feed her. Along with bottled water all the time. The canned food I give her is very high in protein, and is the same brand as the dry kibble, only better on the protein. I only feed her the canned once a day, and have different types of the canned for her. I use one canned at a time though. it comes in Beef, chicken, turkey, and is 95% meat. The rating on the food list is a 6 for the canned food. And of her dry it is a 4. This is why I give her the Canned as well. Suzi seems to be doing well on this , and I'll I want ther to be is very healthy . She is active, alert and very happy all the time. The food is on the pricey side, however, with yorkies, a little goes a long way.

| She is only 5 1/2 months and already 5 lbs? My 2 year old is almost 5 1/2 lbs, I feed her 1/4 cup 3x a day, she recently gained a bit, but she looked thin too. As long as she has energy and plays and poops and pees regularly you should be fine. All dogs are different just like people. make sure you try to feed at the same time each day, that makes potty training much easier because you will know about when they need to go. Good luck! |
