Laya got kennel cough from her first bordatella nose drops. I took her to the ER vet because she was coughing so hard and coughing up white foamy stuff. It was gross. Her cough lasted about 3 days. Her chest was clear so they did not give her antibiotics. She was normal and active except for the cough.

My Sissy also immediately contracted bordetella from the intranasal innoculation!!!!

It is my understanding the the intranasal is thought to be better protective as it is a "live" innoculation, whereas the actual vaccination injection is non-live and that most who will contract it will do so from the intranasal.

It is pretty easy to treat as long as you begin right away. It can progress rapidly to pneumonia left untreated and can become life threatening.

I thought the nasal was given first and then injections as a booster. I might have misunderstood. Mine got the intra-nasal and got kennel cough from it. It lasted for weeks. My vet didnt give antibiotics, just an anti-inflam. shot and some cough suppressant if needed.

Up the nose is a live vaccine and the shot is a dead vaccine although I have heard that it doesnt cover as well. So if you do the up the nose it can cause kennel cough.
