				   | Has anyone ever heard of 3 year Rabbie vaccine? I'm past due on Bailey's rabbies vaccine #1 because i'm nervous about giving him the vaccine and #2 b/c i'm contemplating the 3 yr. vaccine itself. I know it's more money (i'm not worried about that part), i'm more concerned with the saftety of my baby!!!!

				   | This is a silly little game that vets and the manufacturer of the vaccine plays. In the case of Defensor I and Defensor III (rabies vaccine by Pfizer), it is the exact same vaccine labeled differently to meet the needs of dogs in different states with different requirements. I'm not sure if all companies do the same.If you live in a 3-year state, it does not need to be given yearly. Pup shot, then one year later, then every 3 years. I'm sure the vet will insist that you get the 3-year vaccine if you only want to give it every 3 years allow the 1 year rabies would last for just as long. It is a potent vaccine though, so whether you give the 1 year of the 3 year, there is quite a bit of potential for reaction.

				   | Buddy get's the three yr shot. My vet told me last year that although NYS requires the Rabies to be a three yr shot they require it be given every two yrs. Me like the damn fool I am ok'ed it and hegot it again after two years along with every other shot he got. He was so sick. I was a wreck. You can bet your life it won't happen again. If NYS requires it be given every 3 yrs that's what he will get. I really think my vet enjoys giving shots. He's in for a surprise on 5/30 because Bud is getting nothing but Lymes only because we are infested with deer where we live. I am learning about these shots like everyone else thanks to memeber's like Ellie May and Kalina. I have read the 1yr shot is the same as the 3yrs shot, it's all so confusing with every state requiring different times frames. |

Yep - the 3 yr and 1 yr shot are EXACTLY the same, just different labels.

				   | I have a Black Lab, the vet encouraged a 3 year rabies---Beware, my Lab had a near fatal reaction to that first shot. He was 65 pounds at the time, my Yorkie will get 1/2 and then the other 1/2 of his rabies shot. He is only 5 pounds. What we as parents must go through.... |

				   | Everyone is absolutely right. I have managed a vet clinic for 12 years and it is the same vaccine. It is usually the county government you live in that mandates how often your animal needs to be vaccinated, not your vet, and that is determined by the number of reported rabies cases in a given time. Some states may be the same all over, but I know in Tennessee it is mandated by the county and all counties are different. Our county has just recently ruled that we can now give the rabies vaccine every three years and we are using the same vaccine that we have always used and charging the same price (it does not cost us any more to buy it). The rules are: a rabies vaccine this year, another in one year which has to be given within a month of the date given last year and that one can be considered a 3 year vaccine. If you don't follow the law, and IF, and I say IF, your dog bites someone and they want to be difficult enough they can require you to have your dog tested for rabies or make you quarantine it for 10-14 days at your cost. The only test for rabies is a lab test that is performed on the brain which means the animal has to be killed. The vaccine is no more potent than the vaccine your dogs have been getting for years. I always give my boys a dose of Benedryl about 45 minutes before they are scheduled to get the shot. This helps if they happen to have a reaction.

				   | All 3 of mine got the 3 year and have been fine. They're is Baron @ 7 lbs.,Sophie Kennedy @ 9 lbs. and Sammy @ 12-13 lbs. If you're hesitant about giving the whole shot @ one time ask the Vet to give it in 2 parts a month apart. The Vet I used to work for did this in cases of small dogs to reduce the risk of a reaction...Good-Luck...
