They didnt premedicate before the last shot....they told me to give him benadryl at home...i gave him 1 1/2 ml of childrens liquid

I just called the vets and they said absolutely no lepto or corona given..

They said they will give him steroid and benadryl before the rabies and the reason for the iv is just in case the worst reaction would happen...they would be able to give whatever was needed. She said if he went into the worst reaction it would be harder to find a vein..?


as far as the distemper parvo...we will do titer tests

You given Benadryl 15-20 minutes before would be considered premedicating and he shouldn't have reacted that badly (unless you had given the Benadryl too early).
Placing an IV is fine and premedicating is fine but not sure why he needs to stay all day. We stay for 1/2 hour after will Ellie. An hour would be being extra safe. They can react a few hours after but then they can react a day or two after too (generally way less severe), so I suppose whatever your vet is comfortable with. There are some really nice vets out there who let the owner stay in the lobby and hold the dog instead of leaving them.

I gave him the benedryl at 4:30...our appt was for 5:00 but they had an emergency and he didnt get his shot until after 5:30...so do you think that is why he reacted? I am going to ask them about me staying for a bit. I hate to leave him there all darn day...

Could be but still with it given an hour before, I would think he wouldn't have reacted like that. Good question for the vet.

My yorkie also had a reaction on his 3rd booster. When we got home his muzzle swelled and he kept itching his ears. I rushed him back to the vet and they gave him steriod and benedrayl shot. I had to give him bendrayl for a couple more days before he was hisself again. What a scare.

That is what happened to Benjamin...he actually started wacking at his ears when i was checking out at the vets! By the time we got home (a half hours drive) he was really wacking at them alot...before long we saw his face become distorted and his eyes swollen shut! of course by then the vet was closed...so that is why i called the nearest hospital...they told me to give him benadryl and wait an hour...it thank god began to subside..but we gave him benadry all day yesterday too because they were still on the red side yesterday am...it is very scary...they are so little
