| Question about spaying..... Hello, I know theres probably alot threads regarding spaying, but would someone let please let me know what kind of questions im suppose to ask the vet regarding anaesthesia??? Also, what should I look for? and not look for? My yorkie is 4 pounds and 2 yrs old. Im soooo nervous about spaying her because im hearing all these horror stories. Does anyone know a vet in the los angeles, ca area that has experience with small dogs?? and for a reasonable price? I called a vet in Beverly Hills and they it would cost $500 - $700 just for a spay!! that cannot be right!!!!!!! Also, I think shes in heat right now because shes bleeding..... I was told I should wait until its over before I spay her??? Any information would help. Thanks in advance. Jenn |

Well, I would highly reccommend getting pre-op blood work before you get your little one spayed. Your vet may hold her off until she is a little bit heavier, but it all depends. Fiona had her surgery held off 3 weeks since she came into heat before she was supposed to get spayed. she did really well. i was able to pick her up after surgery, and took her home the same day. your baby will probably get sent home with meds for a week, and you gotta keep them low key, no jumping, no baths, leash walk only, and you gotta keep her incision site clean and dry. The vet should go over everything with you before getting this done, when i was a vet tech we would tell you everything. good luck, i used to assist with the vet, and spaying and neutering are simple, but yes, i was still nervous when my little one went under, but she did great..... good luck!

| Find out if they use Isoflurane or Sevoflo gas, those are the safest. And yes, I believe you're supposed to wait a few weeks after her heat to get her spayed because it complicates things when there is more blood involved, if that makes sense. Someone else can probably explain it better. By the way, that price seems crazy but I know Beverly Hills cost a little more for everything, so maybe it's normal there?

| I would highly recommend getting the pre-op blood done as well! I am definitely having her blood work done again even though she just had it, it's better to be safe then sorry. I don't know much about anaesthesia but I am definitely going to ask what type they use to put her under. My dog is not much bigger then yours, just about a half a pound and she did great on her nose job. A spay around here is under $250 with everything I believe. I am sure in an area like Beverly Hills it is very expensive. It sounds like your dog is in heat too, it's better to wait, my mom had our old dog spayed while in heat and she got some infections after and it was pretty scarey, she almost died. |

YT 500 Club Member | Can you be more specific about the pre-op blood work? What would I need to ask for?

| What kind of anesthesia is used? Is an IV placed before surgery and fluids given? Is surgery done on a heated surface? Will you prescribe pain meds? Can you do preop blood work? How iwlll my dog be monitored? The blood work should include a blood panel and CBC. A bile acids test is a good idea but most vets would probably tell you that it is over the top. A urinalysis would be good and an EKG if you want to be really safe.

We can look at it and see if there are any oddities though. Posting reference ranges is always good and if you do the bile acids test, we can definitely help with that. I get plenty of practice in dog health because of Ellie.
