Donating YT 11K Club Member | Expressing anal glands? What do they do when they get this done? Do all dogs need this?

| I had this done at the vet's office just two days ago. He put on a glove, and squeezed the 2 anal glands that are on both sides of their butt. He said they have the same things as skunks, and it's supposed to empty out when they poop, but sometimes it gets a little backed up, and becomes uncomfortable. My Kya was scooting fairly often, which is the most common sign that it needs to be done. The vet or groomer can do it. I think you could do it yourself, but that's just not something I signed up for! |

| I'm not totally sure why people do it. I have heard that once you start you can't stop. We never started and Sophie hasn't had any troubles. I've been thinking of you since you lost your Sophie. Keep your chin up! |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Thank you...i was wondering cause a couple days ago i did see Sophie rubbing her booty on the floor but it was just once or twice she did it, never before. So i was wondering if i had to have Teddy and London's done as well.

| I've heard that too - that once you do it, you have to keep doing it. I don't know if it's true or not. I have never had my Yorkies glands emptied and they are fine -we've never had a problem. I do know that if their stools are always on the soft side, it can be more of a problem. More formed (a bit harder) stools are supposed to help the anal glands empty on their own when the dog poops. |
