| Is Science Diet Bad? In another thread, I just read that Science Diet isn't good for them? I raised Cash on it and he has grown up very healthy and strong, and I was thinking of raising June on it too. So, I need to know if it is bad and why? Please help.

| Some of the ingredients that they use aren't too appealing. You can look up the definition for "by-products" online. Some people just prefer not to feed them. Then there is the preservative ethoxyquin (which they may be getting away from using now) that apparently is banned in some other countries. The box it comes in is labeled "poison". Of course the small amount used in dog food may not (or may) be a problem. Then they use things like corn which some would say isn't digestible enough, etc., etc., etc. So it is whatever the owner is comfortable with.

| I tried so much dry kibble for my picky eater, Bella. She happened to love Science Diet (which a huge sample bag was given to me by my Veterinarian when I brought her in for the first time). The smell is appealing to her, and so apparently is the taste. There is fish oil in it, I believe, which what I've heard is good for their coat. She's tried innova kibble, and a ton of others and just left them behind. Now, Bella is on a constant diet of cooked chicken tenders and science diet kibble. I just rub the chicken tenders into the dried kibble and she gobbles ti all right up. Again, it's all about you. Some here would suggest you stay away because of maybe the ingredients, but I haven't had any problems thus far and I'm glad to hear you haven't either! Although I have visited Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble and the analysis (it's a 1 star kibble), I kinda wanna switch back to the innova and see how it works for her. | It's not considered a high quality food in comparison to others that are available. (But it may be what works for your dog...who knows.) Check out the ingredients and do some comparisons to other brands that are on the market and decide for yourself. Make sure that you supplement as needed to make up for any needed nutrients that the food you select doesn't offer. |

| There is a lot to be said (and researched) about dog food. I know of dogs that have been on what people here would consider the worst foods and have lived long, healthy lives. I feed Tatum Wellness Core. I think it's easier to afford a better food when you're feeding a small dog (at least for me ). I try to feed our large outside dog a decent food but she doesn't get as great of one as Tatum does. That said, my toy poodle was raised on Science Diet (and had prescription ones as he got older) and he lived a wonderful 15 years.

YT 2000 Club Member | My dogs have been on science diet in the past and they all did just fine. . My cats have been on SD for almost 5 years now, all of them are healthy and look great. I started switching my dogs to different foods once I found out that the ingredients werent great. I tried my dogs on everything out there considered high quality and they only would eat a select few, then after they were on it, they either stopped eating the food, had issues while on it or the food became hard to find in my area, so just recently I put 3 of them back on science's diet nature's best and one of them is on a SD prescription diet. They are all doing good. They like it, it likes them. . Is it the best food out there.. nope... but if your dogs are eating it and they are doing well on it my theroy is then why switch...

| my vet put it to me in a way that made a lot of sense to me. science diet, iams, etc are like eating frozen healthy choice dinners every night. Not the worst food choice, but definately not the best choice. think about how hard it is for us to switch a diet that we are use to that is high in preservatives and additives that make it taste even better. If you are use to eating "frozen dinners", then switching over to fresh vegetables is hard. Your dog might snub its nose at a new food for a few days, but mix it in and eventually they will come around. good luck! |

| My vet recommended SD for Chloe. She's been on it for about 3 weeks now, and seems to like it. I figured it was great since my vet recommended it...then I read the ingredients. I'm kind of confused about it...how can it be so great when it contains "by products". I read the cooking for your yorkie thread on here, and I think I'm going to try to make my own food. Maybe mix in a TINY bit of the SD with the home-made food so I know she's getting a good meat source and she'll still be getting the vitamins she needs from the SD. |
