oh sweet sweet boy- my tummy did a loop when i saw his poor leg- I think they are not doing casts lately so that he is able to walk more and thus rehabilitate faster (i think maybe Crystal- Ellie May- was saying this in another thread). Layla has lp and i hope and hope she doesn't need surgery when i see threads like this but i am SO glad he is being a trooper :) Such a good boy!

they probably had a soft bandage on his leg after surgery and thru the night for swelling. It was then removed the next morning. It is better not to be bandaged. the bandage restricts movement and keeps the joints stiff, which we do not want.

Great news. Bless those little knees. You are going to have one more rotten baby after 6 weeks. He will deserve to be spoiled. Good luck in his recovery.

aww poor Hot Rod he looks miserable. But he will feel better soon, Im sure hes as happy to be home as you are to have him home. Great news that all went well.

Ooops! The dr said that Hot Rod will NOT have arthritis issues from this type of issue. I'd writtent that he would. Sorry. :embarasse

He's been great at eating. Albeit I did break down last night and made him chicken. lol. But this morning I mixed it with his food and he just about all of it. Yesterday he drank a bunch of water. He seemed to improve quite a bit after this too.

He's definitely showing signs of improving.:thumbup:

Good luck with Cassi's appt. I hope that all goes well and once she is in recovery I know you will be so relieved and glad that you did it.

Hot Rod is getting better as I type. He's got a good appetite and is drinking water. He's able to hobble around his pad to potty. Still not wanting to use his leg. The surgeons office said that at his 2 week checkup, he may or may not be using it still. It depends on the dog. He did give himself a very thorough bath (as well as he could) last night. I laid on the floor with him in his crate last night to 4:30 am watching him. He allowed me to wash his little face today and comb out his hair on his face. So he's improving as the hours are going by. :)

I have been feeding him while he's in his crate lying down but I am going to see if he will be able to balance himself tonight. :)

hmmmm....I am wondering why an Ortho Vet didn't do the cut and pin procedure for the LP.

When Roxy went in for hers, she had an Ortho Vet do the surgery, and it was explained that she would be doing the cut and pin, and I was paying more. However, during surgery, the Dr. felt that the way Roxy's legs were, that just deepening the groove and tightening the ligaments that she would do fine....Well, I was a little upset, but ok, that was her judgement. BUT at the 6 week checkup her left leg was luxating again, so back for surgery this time to do the cut and pin. And around the 6 month mark, her right leg was luxating again...

I am not saying all this to scare or freak you, but this is what happened to us, so I just wanted to share :(

Prior to surgery, the dr explained each of the 3 different reasons for lp. Hot Rod's leg was bowing since the knee was not positioned correctly. As for the 2 other types of lp he did not see any occurence of those types of scenarios. I guess that the severity of his knee cap groove, or lack of was what was causing the issue. The dr never stated which treatment he was going to do, he wanted to go in and see just how much damage there was first. Hot Rod is only 19 mos. I don't know if this has anything to do with healing but he did say that he was young. I'm sorry to hear that poor Roxy had to endure this a 2nd time. What will they do now? Will she have to have surgery again? How old is Roxy?

Roxy had surgery when she was 1.5 yrs old. She was first diagnosed at around 9 months. Roxy had a slight curvature to her leg structure, so that's why the Dr. decided during surgery to only deepen the groove...BUT apparently that wasn't good enough, bc as I said her legs started to luxate again. She did have to have surgery right away for the one leg and she did the cut and pin. That leg is all good now. When the other leg started to luxate, she had a bad staph infection so we put off surgery. During us trying to cure her staph infection, we discovered she has liver issues (MVD), so I have put surgery off...until...IDK :( I give her Cosiquin everyday and I don't see her limp or carry that leg. She is now 4.5 yrs old, so I suppose since we have everything under control now, I should bring her back to see exactly how bad that leg is luxating. If it is mild, than I do not want to put her thru it again, but if I have to, then I guess I will :(

What was her recovery period like? How did you keep her still and quiet? I'm so concerned about that for Chelsea because she's a little live wire and just LOVES to jump around and play. Thankfully, her surgery won't be for a few months so I can try to get lots of advice on what to expect and how to handle it.

Roxy lived in an play yard expen - I used only 4 panels, the bottom covered in pee pads, water bowl, and a small flat bed. The first surgery she had both done at the same time, no casts, she had the fental patch for the first 4 or 5 days, then I kept her on the Metcamp for about 3 to 4 weeks. The first 2 weeks were VERY ROUGH. I used a small baby blanket as a sling to help her potty and walk just for a few mins. As each week went by she got better and better, and she was allowed a little more walking time. Then I did expand the expen to a 6 panel rectange shaped pen. I also had to do range of motion excercise with her :p

I bet Alaskayorkie could give you ideas on how to keep him less active during the 6 weeks to come. Of course Jack was in a cast wasn't he.

Hmm, this sounds like what we were dealing with. Hot Rod's leg is bowed and the surgeon told us that in time, it may correct although can't say that it will be 100%. I wonder if the condition of the cartilage and all of that stuff plays a part in the type of procedure done?

To be honest, from what I have been told is that alot of General Vets just deepen the grove and tighten the ligaments, and I was told NOT to go that route, to seek a Board Cert Ortho Vet. And I did, I had 2 consults at two different places. I choose the one I liked and made the appt. During the consult of going over what surgery would be, the Dr. told me about the cut and pin procedure and that's what was going to happen with Roxy. It wasn't until the evening after surgery that the Dr. called to tell me what she wound up doing and why. Or course I was a little upset bc I had spent alot of time researching and finding the place I felt comfortable with. I spent $ on extra consults with specialist and even a few general Vets. Then I spent $4000 on her surgery with a B. Cert Ortho Vet thinking she would have the cut and pin, I did both legs at the same time to #1 Save Money and #2 so Roxy didn't have to go thru it 2x - And in the end, I had to pay more money, Roxy had to have a 2nd surgery and possibly a 3rd surgery.

I will not be seeing Hot Rod's surgeon at his 2 week checkup as he will be out of town. I will plan on asking the vet we see then about this. He/she may or may not know (in the charts) as why he did the groove method. When he called me after his surgery, I asked whether a pin was necessary and he said that it was not. I only have to say that I very much liked the surgeon, he is board certified and he was also my neighbors new foundlands surgeon, and he has a yorkie himself. I have to believe that his choice of course of action was and is the best choice for Hot Rod. I can only hope that this is case. I would not want to have to repeat this as you unfortunately have had to do 2x and now possibly a 3rd time. Only time will tell.

He sounds really good and I too hope that he recovers quickly and never has to endure another LP surgery :) I could just have *bad* luck with Roxy :rolleyes:

there are a few different ways to fix LPs but it depends on what the vet finds once he gets in there. sometimes they just deepen the groove and tighten the ligaments. sometimes they need to cut the bone and move it. and sometimes its not they have to put fishing line in too to replace any torn ligaments. So its not that one way is better then the other. It all depends on what exactly is wrong with the dogs stifle, patella, and cranial cruciate ligament.

I'm glad to hear that Hot Rod is doing better today, though i did cringe when you said you bathed him. He shouldn't be bathed until his sutures are removed or dissolve. yes that makes a smelly dog but you can use baby wipes or dry shampoo. there is too great a risk for slippage in the tub and a greater chance of infection.
