| I think my baby has Cataracts - Any advice? Hello everyone. How are you'll today? I've noticed my yorkie's eye has looked a bit weird but every time I go to inspect it it seems normal but last night I noticed it again and got a good look and it looks as if it's a cataract. I have another dog - his son actually who was born with one eye and the poor thing got a bad cataract in his remaining good eye and by the time we caught it the vet said it was too far gone. They're weird - one moment it seems you can notice them and the next they appear normal - at least during the onset. Anyway, my one dog does great. He gets around very well and seems to use his nose as a sort of second vision. But I'm afraid my yorki won't be able to do that, he has horrible allergies. Just sniffing around causes him to choke up real bad. Dust is awful for him and outside makes him choke up, have rashes, etc. So we keep him inside at all times. I want to fix the cataracts if that's what I'm dealing with but my vet said it could cost thousands and I just don't have that kind of money. I know it's my responsibility to take care of my pets and I will find a way but it's hard when the money is so tight. I've read some stuff on the internet about different drops you can buy that supposedly will dissolve the cataract. Does anyone have any info about these? Some sites say they do absolutely nothing and others say they work. I'm trying to find someone who's actually used them so I can get some firsthand advice. I've included some links to these sites advertising the drops. Please if you have any firsthand knowledge or if you know of anyone who's used them then let me know if it worked or not. Thank you so much. I just don't want to have to go through this again with my yorkie. He's my little buddy and he's getting old and has a hard time without loosing his vision /cry |

| I have never heard of anything that will dissolve a cataract. The only thing I know of is cataract surgery. You should consult an opthamologist (sp?) and get the correct info |

| Here's something else very interesting I found. Please read. It's a clinical study on different cataract drops. They ARE NOT a cure but do seem to help. I am going to study this more closely and if me and my vet decide this is an option then I will let you all know how it works. Wiley InterScience :: Session Cookies I hate to always be asking for help. Seems like my babies have so many problems. I've learned so much from my dogs which will in turn let me help others though : ) |

| Have you taken your Yorkie to an opthamologist? As far as I know, only surgery can correct cataracts and it is expensive. Have you looked into Care Credit? There are other options for financial assistance here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...vet-bills.html |

No I sure haven't. I'm taking him to the vet today to have him looked at to see if it is a cataract or something else. The closest place with a opthamologist would be two hours from here. I'll check with my vet and if I have to I'll find a good opthamologist. I'm going to do whatever it takes to make sure my dog gets this fixed. Thank you so much for the links. About those drops - I'm not looking for a cheap way out but I've done more research and find it interesting. Seems like they do work some. Here's another good link. Maybe in time this could be a viable option. Thank you. Here's a link about an interview on these drops that was on TV Last edited by Mweasel; 03-19-2009 at 07:34 AM. | |

But, ALL dogs with cataracts absolutely must be on Flurbiprofen drops to prevent the inflammation of the cataracts that leads to glaucoma, which will often lead to removal of the entire eye.

| My pup has the beginning of cataracts. I take her to a dog opthamologist every 6 months to watch the progress. When she need surgery we will go that route - she has pet insurance that will cover it, but you can make an appointment with a dog opthamologist specialist and talk to them about the prognosis, treatment, and cost. I think it might help for you to get information "from the horses mouth" as it were ! Then you would know for sure what your options are. Good luck!

| We took our lab to the U of M veterinary teaching hospital for cataracts. See if you have a teaching school close by... Might be cheaper to do there. |
