| Double teeth? Is this normal? Tonight I was playing with Sophie (she is 5 lbs. and about 5 months old), and noticed what appears to be teeth behind her existing bottom "fang" teeth. I have read quite a few articles related to "teacup" size Yorkies and in some cases, extensive dental work and double rows of teeth. In my opinion, Sophie is not considered teacup size. This is our first Yorkie. Is this normal ? Are these 2nd teeth that are developing and the existing teeth will fall out? Should I have a vet assess this situation? Any advice you be appreciated! A thank you to everyone in advance. You folks on Yorkie talk are great! We have learned so much from so many people!!! resized.jpg |

| It is normal. Most people have them taken out at the time of the spay/neuter. If you dont do that if they are still there when the pup is a yr old the vet needs to take them out

| Double row My furbabie pictured in my avatar started to grow her second row of teeth right before going to her yearly check up at the vet when she was one and he told me they were nothing to worry about, I asked if they should be taken out and he said they usually take them out at the same time they spay or neuter dogs, and not to worry. He was right, before the age of two they had all fallen out and now she has perfect teeth. |

| From what I have been told and what I have read, it's best to remove them at 5 to 6 months. If you leave them in and hope they fall out on their own, you will have to take very good care with brushing/cleaning your baby's teeth. Double rows of teeth are very suceptible to decaying and that could mean big $$$ in dental care. ~Kathy

| first- she is BEAUTIFUL! second- VERY common in small breed dogs- they have the same amount of teeth as other large breed dogs but just in a much smaller area so they are prone to these double rows- When she goes to get spayed point out that she has this double row and they will pull them out then- this will be less expensive than having it done as another surgery and just one less time that she has to be put under. Small dogs are notorious for teeth issues so it is VERY important that you brush her teeth- daily if you can. She is young so get her used to it now- especially since she has the double row. Layla is 3 now and she gets her teeth brushed every morning and still hates it but puts up with it and I haven't had to have her teeth done by the vet yet and I hope to never have to do it- i hear it can be pricey and I don't want to have her put under for something I can help avoid. |

| It is normal for yorkies to retain puppy teeth. Two of the three of mine had at least one puppy tooth that was retained. Pebbles was a puppy and had 2 removed during her spay. The only problem was that one was right in front and now she has a gap were the baby tooth was remove. Bogey was over a year and since he was a rescue his was removed during his neuter. Prior to is being removed he had very stinky breath but the removal of the puppy tooth had an immediate difference in his breath. Talk to your vet about having any puppy teeth removed during spay/neuter. Leaving them in can cause more harm than good.

| Thanks everyone for the great advice. I called the Vet today to schedule her surgery to have her fixed and we spoke about the teeth. They told me they will remove any remaining baby teeth at the time they she's fixed. Sophie's Mom |

fiona had 1 remaining baby tooth that got extracted at her spay. most vets will do this during spay/neuter. it is common.

| It is common in Yorkies, for this to happen, I am a breeder, and my male did have to have his second row out, also one of his daughter;s who is also very small! But don't worry, they will do fine, I would do it by 8 months if I was you! Chrisy[/I]
