| Some dogs have bad breath for no good reason but does he have retained baby teeth? But yes, liver disease can cause bad breath.

| Yes, he has retained baby teeth and was supposed to have 4 pulled when he was neutered. You are so helpful, thank you.

I think when it is related to liver disease, it is toxins building up

| I don't know why I didn't think of that. Yes, retained baby teeth really cause the breath to smell

| How is his kidney function? I'm sure the vet did a BUN & creatinine level on the pre-op test. Bad breath is also associated with kidney disease. Just thought I'd mention it...I hope and pray that everything turns out just fine.

| Thank you. The vet said all his other bloodwork came back normal. He is having the Protein C bloodwork on Monday and on March 5th he is seeing the internist and possibly radiologist for an ultrasound. Thank goodness, he continues to act happy, alert, active, great appetite. Sometimes I think it's all a bad dream.

| Thank you TLC, I always feel good hearing from you. There are two yahoo groups I found. One with a picture of Dr. Senter and the other with a pic of a pug. Which one is yours? Will my other Yorkie be able to eat the same kibble as Joey cuz they free feed.

Liver compromised dogs should not really be allowed to free feed because they may eat too much at one time and have to process too much protein. They should be fed 4-6 times a day but if the dog is asymptomatic, you could get away with less and a slightly higher protein food.

If the results show that Joey has mild MVD and he remains asystematic, then you can probably feed him a low protein kibble. Natural Balance Veggie formula or another brand's formula for Seniors. And then you can feed both dogs the same. | |

| I may be getting ahead of myself but I am hearing a lot about Royal Canin LS Hepatic.... I am not sure of the exact label. Would that be okay for Sadie, if I supplemented her with extra protein. Also, when I say free feed, I set out a bowl of food in the am and one in the evening. I don't keep refilling it, but both dogs graze on it throughout the day, Joey never eats a lot at one time, Sadie is more of a scarfer.
