I am active on the Dog Liver Disease (with the pug) and that group actively follows and researches Dr. Center with Cornell University.
If the results show that Joey has mild MVD and he remains asystematic, then you can probably feed him a low protein kibble. Natural Balance Veggie formula or another brand's formula for Seniors. And then you can feed both dogs the same.
