I don't think that too many rescues are going to see it our way though. They would accept no vaccines if it put the dog at immediate risk but my guess is that if most of these places don't see annual vaccines given (or maybe every 3 years), they won't like it much because most vets don't agree with the new protocol.

Rescued babies are already so fragile - so their systems could be devastated by overvaccination. Seriously, I sure would hope Rescues would follow the AAHA's 2006 Guidelines for Vaccination - I don't see how they could excuse themselves from it, since it is there to protect a dog's health. /rant

| Lepto Wow, this thread has been so helpful thanks to everyone! I do not think I am going to give Jasmine the Lepto; it does not seem worth the risk. But in what situations or environments is it advantageous for a dog to have the vaccination? I know if it is prominent in the area the dogs should get the vaccine, but what conditions is it prominent in? Thanks Also, this is my first post so hello to everyone! |

| Rarely if ever should small dogs get to lepto vaccine. This is a very personal decision between you and your vet and lepto is a huge problem in some areas and quite dangerous but the vaccine is dangerous too. Lepto is found in rodent urine and is a problem on farms and by slow moving water. The intranasal bordatella vaccine can cause the disease (it is said to be less severe) but the disease itself can lead to pneumonia. Most groomers require it. It is non-core and again one of those things that each owner has to decide. Ellie has never and hopefully will never get it. However, can be sensitive to meds and doesn't go to the groomer, so it isn't an issue for us to avoid it. There isn't one answer for all dogs for any of this but some breeders say "No Lepto" right in their contract.

| Having worked at veterinary hospitals for several years, I've spoken with representatives from rescues several times when they called to check on owners. They typically ask if the owner's pets are up to date on their shots-- vaguely like that-- and if the owners take good care of their pets. I know that a few times animals were not up to date, but if I provided the information WHY we didn't vaccinate a certain animal-- age, previous reactions or whatnot-- the reps from the rescues seemed to respect that. My advice would be to be forthright with your vet as to why you don't want to vaccinate against certain things, and have them make a note in your file so that if someone calls for a background check, the nurse or staff member that speaks to them will have enough information to advocate on your behalf. Most people who work at vet hospitals are big animal lovers and like to see their clients help out pets in need, and certainly don't want to stand in the way of an adoption to a good family! The hospital that I work at hardly ever vaccinates anybody against Lepto. There's just too many risks associated with it, and in our region the risk of exposure is very very low, so we really only vaccinate dogs whose owners request it because they travel to higher risk areas. We also don't vaccinate against Corona because there's research out there that suggests that natural exposure to it builds up immunity better than the vaccine. I don't vaccinate my dog for either of those, but she does get DHPP, Rabies, and Bordatella-- and when we lived in Michigan she was vaccinated against Lymes because of how prevalent it was in the area.

As for the Bordatella vaccination, Cassi received the nasal spray. I am not planning on boarding him and I do my own grooming. However, I do like to bring them to dog parks so I'm thinking that I should probably vaccinate him for Bordatella. I guess the more research you do, the more you question whether to vaccinate or not. Such a dilemna...

| Squirrels aren't a primary host for Lepto as far as I know-- it's generally rats and mice. I've heard of raccoons and possums carrying it somewhat often-- in fact, when I used to rehab wildlife back in Michigan, we would vaccinate our raccoons for it before releasing them to the wild. As far as determining the risk in a particular area, I'd speak with your veterinarian about it. Even within a region or a state, there are little pockets where certain diseases are more or less common-- if you trust your vet, they'd probably be the best one to tell you which diseases they see coming through their door, and which they haven't seen in twenty years.

| Well, the vet probably knows better than I do. I know it is possible for *most* animals to contract lepto-- including us-- I've just not heard of squirrels as a particularly common host.
