Jackson going to vet in an hour, quick question I have a question. Jackson has had two sets of his puppy shots, including distemper, hepatitis, parvo, corona, parainfluenza and leptop. The first time at eight weeks old (didn't include lepto, just the other ones) and the second time was around 12 week, it was a DHLPP shot in which he had a reaction to the lepto. Is it entirely necassary to get the boosters? He seems perfectly healthy, last vet check he was perfectly healthy, he's a bigger boy. I've read so many things stating the boosters aren't needed at all. So when I take him to the vet today, should I just tell them I want the bordetella shot? (I need this to get him groomed, correct??) Thanks for the quick help! OR are all 4 puppy shots required for certain things like grooming, boarding, puppy classes, etc in the future? |
I only get the core vaccines (Rabies, Parvo, Distemper) and do not get any of the others. If my baby had a reaction, I absolutely wouldn't get that vax bc a reaction last time could mean worse this time. I don't get bordatella, but if you're required to get it - that's another issue. Here is a helpful link: Vaccination Schedule Recommendations For Dogs |
OK, thanks. So did you give your dog the parvo and distemper three or four times, or no? |
I'm just not entirely sure what I want to do tell my vet to do because if the four repeated puppy shots are not really required or risking his health, I'd rather not do them again since he already had all those vaccinations twice. But I don't want him to be considered "not up to date" on his shots, you know what I mean? For example, if I want to adopt a dog in the future, and they look back at my records and see Jackson didn't have his third and fourth set of "puppy shots" will I be considered not keeping up to date on his shots? |
Yes, you could be considered "irresponsible" by rescues later on if they see that and don't have an explanation. Dogs need 1-4 sets of distemper, parvo and hepatitis. It depends on when they were started. If they were started at 8 weeks, I would give another set at 12 and the last one at 16 weeks. Parainfluenza is usually included in these combos and may be hard (and not necessary) to get around. Lepto can be extremely dangerous (even fatal) to small dogs and should only be given if your dog is at very high risk (if ever). Corona, especially as they get older, isn't something I'd give. Rabies has to be given according to the law but never on the same day as another vaccine and hopefully you can wait til 6 months. Bordatella is not a core vaccine but most groomers, boarders, etc. require it. Personal choice... It is likely that your pup reacted to the lepto but since they are more prone to reacted the second or third time lepto is given, it may not have been that. That is one problem with giving so many vaccines at once. Now nobody knows what caused the reaction. It is going to be difficult for him to go without DHP forever, so I would probably premedicate (the vet should do this) and give it but I would really reconsider the lepto. What was the reaction last time? |

Lepto and corona and bordatella have nothing to do w/ being "up to date". I mean really, the ONLY vaccine required by law is Rabies (to be technical). |
Well said, Ellie May  My girls did not get the Lepto but did get the Bordetella (they are around other dogs a lot), the three Core Vaccines and the puppy rabies. My tiny girl had a seizure after the third and last Core vaccine and was supervised at the vet's that afternoon. She was fine after and only had the one seizure. They both had their rabies on different days. |
I forgot to add that before we gave my tiny girl, Sophie, her puppy rabies we premedicated her and she was fine. |
Thanks so much for your input everyone! Jackson did a lot better today than he did last time. And they gave him (as said above) something first and pre-medicated him before giving him the Distemper vaccine which seemed to help a lot. They did not include Lepto in that this time. He was due today on their records for Distemper as well as rabies and lymes but I said I didn't want to give them all at once. He seems fine right now, he's very sleepy so he's asleep on my bed. And he's a whopping 8.6 lbs!! |

And last time, they told me it had to have been the lepto and they put it real big on his file "NO LEPTO!" But when they gave him the vaccine the first time, he wigged out like I've never seen him before! He cried for a good five minutes after the shot was given. Then I took him home, and within five-ten minutes of being in the house, he was acting very funny and then he starting vomiting. He threw up 3 or 4 times in big amounts. Then he was dry heaving and circling around and around, not walking well. I called the vet immediately and they told me to bring him back in, so I did, and they went on to give him another shot (I guess to reverse the shot?) and some Benadryl. The rest of the night he was very groggy, but he got better within 2 days. |
i dont kno if you got the bordetella or not but i do recommend it,bailee came to me with kennel cough and it was terrible....i hope we never have to go thru that again! |

so anyways, now Jackson has had three sets of distemper (DHPP first and third times, and DHLPP second time) First at 8 weeks, 2nd at 12 weeks, 3rd just today. 2nd shot was the one that had the lepto in it. |
Sounds like you received great advice on your questions about vaccines. As for wanting to rescue in the future, you are very wise to want to be compliant on your vet care. Rescues want to make sure you are a responsible pet owner and if your puppy has a reaction to vaccines then that would be a very acceptable reason for you not to continue with a certain vaccine. Make sure you have documentation within your pups chart and a good strong relationship with your vet and that will say wonders for your reputation as an excellent and caring pet owner. Rescues only want the best for both the pet and the owner. :) |

In my opinion, a person should never have to explain why they did not elect to get Lepto, Corona, Lymes, or Bordatella - those are elective vaccines, not core. |
