There are prescription diets available through your vet that may be prescribed for health issues like liver disease, kidney disease, even allergies. The problem with the prescription diets is that the ingredients they use are an inferior quality. They are usually a huge step down from the diet your dog has been on if you have been feeding a high quality commercial diet. That's why many of us choose to homecook instead.

Oh Cindy, I'm so sorry you put the puppy on commercial food, especially since he's never had it before and was doing so beautifully. Puppy's don't know what's good for them, so that's why it's up to us to give them the very best, and home cooking is. Puppies are like toddlers, we just have to keep finding things they like, and that are healthy for them. I would have given that boy something with cheese or even a nice steak if that's what it takes. Most dogs and puppies will usually gobble commercial foods because they love stinky things, and commercial pet dry foods smell so horrible when they are dried out, they use rancid resturant grease to spray on it to cover the stench. Dogs will even eat poop or rotten fish from a garden, but we wouldn't feed it to them just to get them to eat. Then when the newness is gone, they don't want to eat the kibble very well. I hope you re-consider feeding him real food Cindy.

I haven't given up on the little rascal. He is still being offered home cooked food - added to the base recipe you provided me with I have tried baked chicken, turkey, beef, even lean pork, cheese, you name it I've tried it. The stubborn little fella will eat a bite or two and then turn his nose up. Young pups are a bit different than working with adults. At 9 weeks he can't afford to miss meals. So we do what we have to do. I'm not sure what his new parents are going to feed, but he is nibbling on the kibble that Maggie May's folks will be feeding her.

I would cook 100% good healthy and yummy food for them. Roxy has no problems eating it.

So I was resorting to *adding* all sorts of toppers to get him to eat, finally I decided to go back to the Frozen Raw food diet for him, and now he licks the plate clean, no 'bratty' issues

I cook everyday for my family and I mix some of the meat sauce on trixie's food. By the way I cook very healthy

Thank you Ladymom and Ellie May for the explanation. I worry about the same thing when it comes to homecooking..the nutrition balancing. With Pao, the pro is by far more than the cons. I am just keeping tab on his health through blood tests. I hope that will be enough to indicate his health.

I've been homecooking for Punkin for three years. Locally people sneered when I told them. They didn't understand. People food equaled poison for dogs or they said I would have a very bad behaved dog . After the big recall people are much more interested in homecooking and is much more accepted. Sadly it took the recall for that to happen.

Cindy, get an inexpensive round steak, (1/3 to 1/2 inch thick) put a bit of olive oil in a skillet, turn the heat on high, get the skillet hot then put the meat (whole) in and cover for two minutes, turn steak over, cover for two more minutes. Cut the rare to med. rare steak in tiny bite size pieces and give him about a tablespoon, then sit back and watch the fun. He will gobble, guaranteed! Maybe send some recipes along with the puppies. Would be such a shame if they couldn't continue to eat real food. Cindy, why didn't you keep the female? She would have been perfect to breed in a couple of years wouldn't she? She sure is a little dolly. Someone sure got lucky!

Donna, I'll do just that if the little meanie decides to turn his nose up again. Right now he is back to gobbling up his regular homed cooked meal. I guess he had a couple of "off days". It is scary with pups.

I am basing my breeding program around Chattie/Peppy females who will be bred to Kooper. These two pups are the result of that combination. It works . I may decide to keep a female later on, but the two families that are taking Beauregard and Maggie May are absolutely perfect.

my breeder has the girls on a purina food, and I am looking into getting them on somthing healthier after they get here. Might anyone point me to a simple list of "feed them this......." ????? lol ! here's hoping right.

Yep, it's like HK, only you add your own meat to it. It's got the supplements in it, and you just rehydrate with water. You can add other things to it too, like beans, eggs, fruit, cheese, etc. for variety.

Here are the ingredients from their website: Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Broccoli, Celery, Apples, Whole Egg, Flax Meal, Parsley Leaf, Calcium Carbonate, Carob Powder, Kelp Powder, Alfalfa, Ginger Root, Garlic

Oh boy, I didn't realize there was garlic in it until just now. Well, maybe we'll have to look for something else. *sigh*

Nutrition balancing with dog food has become such an exact science that I just leave it to nutritionists. I don't want to find out later that Ellie would've been better off on dog food, so I try to follow the recipe as closely as possible.

I am new here, but this is exactly why I joined. I love to hear the discussions on home vs. bought food. I have had my babies on homecooked food for 6 years and she is doing well. She loves Med rare lamb especially. I try to mix in pasta and vegee's etc. She has always been very healthy. I also try to make sure I give her a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt during the week. The probiotics I think have been helpful for her tummy. But I think I can learn alot here. Thanks for all the great info ladies!! What a great site!
