| coccidiosis As some of you have read I was given a pekingese that started having diarrhea.. last weekend we took her to the emergency vet and she was diagnosed with coccidiosis. Before the symptoms showed, I let her run around the house with my yorkies and she would have poop accidents. After discovering that she had it, I decided to keep her put in a pet taxi until treatment is done. Well, today my smallest (6 lbs) and youngest (8 months) yorkie had diarrhea. It was just a little bit, but I am concerned that she may have caught coccidiosis. Should I be concerned that she had coccidia or just wait and see if it clears up on its own incase its just diarrhea from something else like eating something?

| I would watch her close because she could become very dehydrated fast. As far as starting the treatment I am not sure but I know someone on here will know. Good luck to you.

| You should call your vet ASAP just to see if it is something that is contaigous (spelling?). What do you think you may have fed them to give them the problem?

| IANAV (I am not a vet ) but my vet said that coccidia wasn't super contagious. Also the incubation time is around 2 weeks. IT's possible that all your pups were exposed to coccidia but at different times. I would call your vet and ask to drop off a fecal sample. If it's positive for coccidia, the vet will probably prescribe the same meds (normally Albon) as he did for your peke. How is the Peke doing? |

| The peke is doing good now.. diarrhea cleared up the first night they gave him the medicine. I'm almost certain that Chloe has it. I woke up this morning to the same smell as we had with the Peke and diarrhea all in her pet taxi. And it had blood in it. Problem is the vet closes at 12, and I didn't wake up till 1... cuz my husband doesn't wrok till 2:00. And we are completely broke cause we had the pekingese spayed and x-rayed and bought a bunch of advantage and heart worm pills. Everyone that I ask to borrow money from says I shouldn't have brought the Peke in.. cause I can't save every animal. So, should I just give her some of the Pekes albon and see if it clears up a little bit until Monday and then take her to our vet (she lets us charge)?

I'm not sure about that. Isn't there a 24 hour place you can call and see what they say or even try calling your vet office and see if they have a recording and an alternate number where they can be reached at. It's worth a try. Good Luck. Keep us posted.

| Sophie came down with coccidia also, about a week after I brought Daisy home. Apparently, when I visited Daisy's breeder the week before I brought her home, I took Sophie with me and she picked it up in the breeder's yard. Since the symptoms were similar, my vet suggested I give her some of Daisy's Albon and I took Sophie in on Monday for the fecal test. At that time, Sophie got her own scrip of meds. I'm not recommending that you do that, but it is possible your vet will suggest the same route for the weekend. |

| Unfortunately my vet required an exam before they would prescribe the albon but some are hopefully more lenient especially if you already had one who tested positive. You can sometimes get it from a breeder too. |

| She said since she has the signs of it.. soft stools, with blood and mucous.. but acts fine, then she probably has it.. she took a fecal, but said no parasites showed up.. but sometimes it doesnt.. so im giving her albon now and they gave me enough to treat my boy too.. so hopefully I can take care of this problem without any more emergency vet visits.

| When one of your dogs come down with it they usually treat any other dog that was exposed. (atleast thats what my vet does.) I have also read that plain yogurt helps out too. I give my girl 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt everyother day. they love it and it's good for them. Smiles, Myra |

| Would it be a bad idea for breeders to send home a 10day supply of Albon home with each new pup? So many pups come down with it because of the stress of going to a new home, and I know alot of breeders treat their whole litter with Albon because the incidence of disease is so high. |
