| Rabbies shots at 3 1/2 months? Hi I have two yorkie puppies, born on 10-14-08. The vet scheduled their rabbies shots for 1-30-08 which will make them 3 1/2 months. Is this too early for this shot? What are the risks? I'm very happy and comfortable with the vet I'm using, and he said they'll be fine at that age. Thought I'd double check with the yorkie experts first

| Depending on the state, sometimes you have to give it at three months. I woul hold off as long as legally possible because it is a very potent and potentially dangerous vaccines. If I was really concerned with their size, I'd hold off as long as I could get away with it.

| Rabies should be given at 12 weeks- and it should only be good for a year, after that year is up, the next rabies is for three years- but i'm sure some states are different than others.

| My vet waits until 6 months on Yorkies. You can get by with saying they are too small for the vaccine until then. I really don't think it's safe to give it that early, as Crystal said it's a very dangerous and strong vaccine. Maybe consult with another vet before you make your decision. |

Not all area's will allow you to get away with "thier too small". I would look into your area's rabies info. All of my pets have gotten thier rabies shot between 3 and 5 months and all of the have done fine. I agree that its a strong vaccine however its not any worse than some of the others out there.

| Hm, I'm not sure, but just wanted to say that Baxter was born on 10/14/08 also! And I believe I'm getting his rabies shot when he is four months. For free too! My roomie's dad is a vet.

good grief.. I didnt say that it wasnt a strong vaccine. From what I understand the lepto shot can also cause severe reactions in dogs and even cause death also, that is what I was referring too apparently I should of been a little clearer

| Thanks for all of the advice everyone. It's all helped a lot. I recently found out I have to have rabbies shots for them by law at 4 months arg! I'm going to talk to my vet about my concerns and see where I can get. And that's so neat that my babies have the same birthday as someone on here

I have shipped a few pups that were 12-16 weeks and never had to have one get the rabies vaccine before they left. My vet has always written "too young" or "too small" on the form if they are under 6 months of age. There are rabies laws, yes, but I highly doubt you would be in trouble for waiting until a puppy under 5 lbs is 6 months of age to have it administered. I think I would be more concerned about the health of my puppy than having someone "find out" you waited 2 months to get it done. I think they are probably more worried about people who consistently don't vaccinate their dogs over periods of years. I have never heard of anyone having an issue over a couple of months for a small puppy. Then again, I could be wrong... | |

| The really important thing is to not have any other vaccines at the same time you get the rabies. My vet made us wait 3 weeks from her other shots. |
