| i feel rather strongly about commercial grade petfoods I just want to say that i feel really strongly about commercial pet foods. i am not an expert in dog food, but what i do know is that most commercial grade dog food is CRAP! it is unhealthy for the dogs and it angers me that chain pet stores sell them. most of these foods are made with maximum profits in mind, therefore, cheapest(aka. BAD!) ingredients they can get their greedy hands on. also, a lot of preservatives are in these commercial dog foods since most large pet supply chain stores have the requirement of REALLY LONG shelf lives! it's just all around a really bad idea to support those brands!

| I agree. I think it's a combination of a few things. Either people don't know any better, or they don't care or they want the cheapest food. It's sad really....

| Everytime I see a commercial for "Beneficial" my skin crawls. The bag looks so pretty but all that artificial coloring on the food is enough to make you want to loose your lunch. Not to mention the terrible garbage and fillers they put in the food itself. YUK! |

YT 1000 Club Member | I agree and all that stuff does is make your yard look like a cow pasture. I'm talking from experience with big dogs. I've never had Roxie on any of that garbage. I am wondering though, could it be her food that causes her to have such stinky breath? She's on Royal Canine. |

| People just dont know. They look at pedigree and they think that its the best food in the world. Because of all the bull crap the comercials are feeding them. The first ingrediant in many of these comercial brand dog and cat foods are corn. Dogs and more especially cats, are carnivorous creatures. Wen was the last time you have seen a dog or a cat out in a corn feild, preying on a ear of corn??? Never, unless they were just playing.. VItamen K isnt good for cats or dogs but almost all those foods have it. I hate watching those new pedigree comercials with the dogs eating and the announcers are saying stuff like. "Why feed your dog artifictal colors or flavors? Pedigree has no artifiial colors or flavors, its just packed with gooood stuff" I mean, Why wouldnt uneducated peopel fall for that?? I hate cesar dog food, And a bag of wellness (At the same size bag of cesar) is cheaper then a bag of cesar. And cesar is CRAPOLA! |

| What do you feed then? Do you all make your own food? I am concerned about giving them the correct nutrition. What is the best food? I use IAMS, not good? |

| I agree. Commercial Foods are so full of junk. When we got Biggie he was on Purina Puppy Chow. We immediately started mixing it with Solid Gold. As soon as he was eating 100% mix of Solid Gold, we saw that his coat looked healthier and he had smaller poopies. |

Iams is one of the worst..ICKK.. IMO, Ol' roy is the worst in the world! YOu should try switching to Wellness or a HIGH quility food. Stay away from food with corn as an ingrediant. Corn is one of this biggest cause of allergies in dogs! Try finding a food that has only meat products (NOT biproducts) As the first 4-5 ingrediants! Grain free food would be the best. BUt I feed lamb and rice food from wellness. | |

| I have to agree 100% also. I was in a "Mega Store" today and looked at the ingredients on the pet foods that were on display. First ingredient, some sort of corn, on all three brands. Read the labels, ask other YT'ers, and try to give them the best that you can afford. A smaller bag that costs a little more will go a long way since they will be getting more value out of it.

| My uncles dog (English setter) Was eating Ol' roy dog food. And she would have to eat 10 cups of it In 1 day to get the nutrients she needed. BUt on wellness she only needs 3-4 cups per day to get those nutrients, and she isnt getting any of that junk. She was eating 3 cups of ol'roy and the poor thing was overweight (too much junk in it and not enough good) and her hair was dry and brttle and falling out. NOw she is PERFECT size and her hair is sooo healthy! She can do alot more hunting now as well. It makes soo much differance! |

| Amen! I agree! Life's Abundance is the ONLY way to go with my babies. No longer is my yard polka-dotted. No longer do I need to supplement them for skin and hair. No longer do need to be concerned about recalls. No longer do I need to worry about what is IN their food! Everyone here makes the choice for their babies! I believe that we make the choices in the interest of our babies AND based on the information we have. If you ever want to try a sample - just PM me and I'm happy to send you a free one! Great Thread!!!!

| I agree, and need some help. How much protein should be in the food, and when they say things like chicken meal is that bad? What words should be a red flag to stay away from.
