I have heard that it is a drug and not a pesticide, that is why some places you have to have a presciption for it to get it. I have used it on chester for years |
It's poison, yeah, I'd say it's harmful. Syd doesn't get any chemicals. Try to find an all natural repellent. |
There will always be an exception to the rule. It would depend greatly on the area in which you live as to what you should or want to use. If you live, like I do, in an area thick with shrubs, grass and other dogs and lot's of deer you have to protect your dog so you have no choice but to use these products. I have started to stretch the dose to every 6-8wks instead of four and have found thus far, still no ticks or fleas. Heartworm is a must also. There are so many dogs walking the same path that we do Bud has to protected at all times. Not all people pick up after their dogs. Disgusting I know but some just don't care that they are spreading disease. Also I know Hartz is not recommened today but I had two dogs that wore nothing but Hartz collars. Both lived to be 17yrs and 16yrs old with no problems at all and no fleas or ticks ever. Like I said there is always an exception to any rule. |
Fleas Is this diatomaceous earth the one that they use in swimming pools?? |
fleas I am wondering too about diatomaceous earth, since I am doing research at this time on that very subject! I am not familiar with this product from our Yorkie talk website, but I was searching today about a natural alternative to Frontline and I came across this product! I do know there are two different ones, one for pool filters or it is in pool filters, and one food only and harmless! I have got to get an opinion, since I did purchase some of the fine powder form and I want to be sure about it first! Please anyone opinions! |
I use frontline plus on all of my animals and have for years and havent had any issues.( My vet only uses advantage, so no money hungry issues there.) However, I dont use the recommended dose because of the dangers giving them to much. I have to treat them with something, the fleas are of abundance around here and Im in no way going to have an infestastion. :) |
frontline on the yorkies I am really concerned and plan on banning it this summer. I live in Upstate New York so I only have to worry about summer time. This is enough of a threat for me to hold off as much as I can on my two little peanuts, Midge and Bette Davis!! |
Fleas There is another thread on here talking about safe flea control. They are talking about the diatonaceous earth. Its not the swimming pool kind its call earthworks health. |

VERY INTERESTING.... causes cancer in rats... hmmmmmm |
My breeder gave me a catalog from Pet Edge.... filled with pet products at discount prices. AWESOME!! Anyways I found a product in here that is an ALL NATURAL SPOT TREATMENT FOR FLEAS & TICKS!!!! It is called Natural Defense. I am going to google it and check out the ingredients to see what is in it. The website for Pet Edge is: PetEdge.com Wholesale prices on exclusive dog grooming and pet supplies Check into their products. They can also send a catalog right to your home. Oh here is the website for the all natural Flea and Tick Spot Treatment... looks like they also make a spray too.... Naturally Safe Flea, Tick & Mosquito Control – SENTRY® Natural Defense™ The ingredients listed includes the following...peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemon grass oil and thyme oil. I am going to start using this once I am done with the frontline treatments that we have left. I will let you all know if my babies get any fleas.... Also it is very cheap... much cheaper than frontline... in this catalog it says if you buy 1-11 it is $8.79 for 3 months of treatments, or if you buy 12 and over the price is reduced to $7.89 for 3 months of treatments!!!! Wow!! |
Here is the brochure ..... |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...r-not-use.html If you click on the links in it, they go to side effect reports. You can also type "Sentry" into the search on YT. It seems this product is responsible for quite a few reactions... |
I only ever used this once...on my last yorkie...and she threw up all night..luckily by the morning she seemed to have recovered..I certainly wouldn't use it on my little Pixie I would be afraid it would kill her. does anyone know of a natural flea repellant? maybe tea tree or something like that? I would like to be able to make my own...I have yet to see a flea on Pixie though and she barely scratches....luckily so far. |

I read those reviews ... Side effects I read .... #1 People said it Smells... I really don't care as long as I don't have to live with the guilt of knowing I am putting poison on my babies. #2 The worst side effect noted was that in some pets it caused loss of hair which my babies get anyways with the frontline. Along with the rolling around and crying immediately after I apply Frontline to their backs. It isn't proven to cause CANCER as Frontline has caused cancer in rats... Frontline does work... I can say that... but my father owns a pest control company and he has studied the chemicals in Frontline and he says it is a poison. If we aren't supposed to get it on our skin... how is it safe to soak our little dogs shoulders in this chemical... it isn't! I will let everyone know my honest non-biased opinion once I use the Natural Defense product. Also... thanks for pointing out that info... :D |
