| 4 month old getting her SHOTS Hello, My 4 month old Millie is getting her 3rd set of shots this Monday and I am very anxious. Last time, about 3-4 weeks ago, she got her 2nd set and was so sore that we could hardly pick her up, hold her, or just pet her back. This lasted about 3-4 days. I am not sure if it was just the rabies shot that did this to her (she didn't have any reaction to the first set) or any combination there of. So I was wondering if there was anything I can do to help her through this faster and/or with more ease? I know what to do to help my kids through theirs, but not for the puppy. Thanks for any suggestions, ~C |

I forgot to add- my vet always gives them a shot of benadryl prior to a vaccine, to reduce any possible reaction and minimize discomfort. The benadryl also makes them sleepy so they can rest the remainder of the day.

| The Rabies vaccination is the most likely to leave them sore, so that honestly might have been the cause of her discomfort. If she is getting a Bordatella vaccination, you might want to ask your vet for an intranasal vaccination over an injection to save her a poke. The idea of separating vaccines is also a good one-- at the place where I work, we will often have owners of small dogs bring them back about a week or so after their initial appointment so that we can avoid injecting them too many times and causing more pain than is necessary.

| my little girl did same thing My little girl did the same thing. She was sore that day and the next but was fine after that. There was no swelling of the face and kinda laid around and wasn't carrying herself like she normally does. I called the vet and they said I could get some pain meds for her. They said it was an reaction to the shots. I did the shot beforehand to help with any reactions then they gave her two more. She goes back in a week for her next ones. They are already spreading out her shot but I'm going to see about maybe spreading them out even more. I was wondering if this was normal for yorkies. She is about 10 weeks old. |

| Had the same reaction with Asha when she got her shots the first time. I didn't know at that time, that it was best to spread them out. She would yipe anytime somebody touched her shoulder area for 2 or 3 days. I called the vet and he told me to give her Childrens Benadryl and 1/2 baby aspirin. Since then, I never let them get more than 1 shot at a time, and given them half a baby aspirin 2 times per day for the first 24 hours. Not one problem since, and they take their shots like troopers!

| I was wondering how many shots you do at once and at how often? She got 2 plus the preventive and she goes back this week. Want to be prepared to tell them what I want to help my puppy. |

| Thanks for the info. I will ask them to spread it out more and I think I will try the baby aspirin for tomorrow. Here is hoping it goes well, ~C |

| My Trixie is 4mo. and she got 2 shots on Friday, a rabies and a distemper. She wimpered when I tried to pick her up. But other than that she is fine. I know it's hard when they are hurting and you feel helpless. Trixie is fine now when I pick her up so it should only last about 2 days. COCO PEBBLES TRIXIE Hope your little one feels better soon |
