| 1. Never give table scraps. If he gets it once he will think he gets it again. 2. Don't free feed. He gets his food when you give it to him, and if he doesn't eat it within about 15 minutes, take it away. After missing one meal he will most likely give in. 3. Make him sit or back up or something before getting his food. If he doesn't know any tricks, once you teach him one you can use this tactic. It makes my pups think dinner is a reward. 4. Vary his diet. I don't know what kind of access you have to pet food stores in your area, but we feed Nature's Variety kibble, canned, and raw. Provides a nice variety without having to gradually transition their food. Welcome to YT! There is a lot of nutritional information for dogs on this site, so hopefully you can find something you like to feed your dog. He most likely picked up some bad habits from his previous owner, and you can easily correct them by being consistent. Best of luck!

| I've added fat-free chicken/beef broth when I've had trouble with one of mine not wanting to eat. When Rosie came to me, she had only been fed table scraps. I had to hand feed her for quite awhile. It was a mess, but now she does super. Good luck.

| Everyone is correct about the table scraps. Once you start they just don't want to stop. Pedigree isn't such a good food. You may try a better brand of food. Plus remember she hasn't been there that long and she has to get use to things.

| he is probably just stressed when i bought mine the lady told me that mine probably wouldn't have much of an appetite because she would probably be a little stressed from being in a new environment. Mine was 8 wks old at the time and she gave me some puppy stuff that you can buy at the pet store that give them energy and makes them hungry. I did have to give her some for several days to make her eat and it did help. |

| Withholding food from a puppy can cause some serious problems. If you want your puppy to be healthy and happy, homecook. It isn't difficult. Start out with some white rice and boiled chicken. Right now his stomach is very tiny, so he won't be able to eat but maybe a teaspoon full every three hours.

| Wow, you managed to get a pretty wide variety of responses! I'm new to having a puppy too - we've had our little boy for about a month now. When he didn't want to eat in the beginning, we freaked out a little too, and ended up giving him some plain boiled chicken and plain boiled white rice. The only problem with this is if you happen to have a picky eater, they'll expect this and it'll be doubly as hard to get back to kibble. And you've got to get away at some point from just chicken and rice... homecooking really sounds wonderful, but it requires getting a nutritionist and adding special supplements to the homecooking (I read tiny dogs need as much calcium as a grown woman! that's hard to provide without supplements in home cooking). If I had more time and the patience to brush my dog's teeth often, I'd love to do the homecooking route, but as it is, I decided to do my research here on YT and found my dog a high quality kibble. We were lucky enough to not get a picky eater (so far anyways), so he transitioned quickly and happily back to a better kibble than the one the dumb breeder had him on after we got him some medicine for stomach parasites (which was part of why he wasn't eating). Everyone seems to have a different story, and there are tons of different opinions on feeding... some people even feed their dogs raw meat which I'd never even heard of before YT... and every dog is different too. I'm sure you guys will be fine. If you're too worried about the eating, I vote for a little boiled chicken and rice. Try mixing some of his kibble in with it to give him some good vitamins too. Then check out this thread to get yourself some free samples of high quality dog food to let your pup try out. Good luck. :-) Lauren & Nikko PS: We'd love to see some pictures of your new little one too! Last edited by lemonlauren; 01-01-2009 at 03:18 PM. |

| I free feed mine and love it, how much does your little guy weigh? I have always liked the idea of free feeding when dogs are small like this, as they should be able to eat when they're hungry. Hopefully your little guy will start eating, I know how worried it makes you, as I have problems with my little one once in awhile, where she won't eat all day, and she's only around 2 lbs. so it worries me to death. Please stay away from any people food, or he will be more picky than he already is |
