| New mom to 9 week old Yorkie (long and advice needed!) Hello, this is my first post and I hope Its in the right spot! I just bought my Rascal who weighs almost 1 pound this past Sunday. Pet store told me he was 10 weeks old, and healthy and weened. LIES. He is 9 wks old, not weened and I have already had 2 vet visits Monday and tuesday with an initial check up and then an episode with hypoglycemia!! He was dehydrated, and the vet told me to give him Ncal and Pedialyte every hour for 24 hours (this was yesterday at 830am). I did that and he is now much much better! So after all that, I am now trying to get him to eat and he wont eat anything but boiled chicken!!! I make it for my cats and he got a tiny piece and thats how i figured out that he loves it. So what I am doing, is I am taking boiled chicken and shredding it and mixing it with Pedigree puppy can food and he eats mainly the chicken. I am also still giving him some Pedialite for the dehydration and vomiting (which he only vomited once) and water thru an eyedropper. is that still ok?? How should I be weening my baby? I am feeding him about every 2-3 hours and giving him a tiny bit of NCal about every 4 hours. Am I doing anything wrong??? Please ANY advice is needed and wanted. I love this little guy and I have 2 poms and when they were pups, the were weened, and Im not sure how to ween a 9 week old pup! I know the store lied to me, but he was sick when I got him and I dont regret getting him, cause I think he wouldnt of made it another day in that stupid careless pet store!!! How long do you think it will take to ween him and is it ok to be giving him the boiled chicken that often. I know all about pancreatitis b/c my cat is recovering from it(I had to syringe feed her for 3 weeks to get rid of that and her fatty liver disease) She gets boiled chicken everyday as a treat and I have no problem with making it!!! He sleeps in a crate at night and Im doing all the new puppy things, but I am just unsure about his weening!!! PLEASE HELP! I dont want to hurt or cause harm to my new sweet little baby! Thank you!!! |

| Sounds like your doing all the right things. I'm not sure what you mean about needing to know how to wean her? If she is eating solid foods, and she probably has been for a few weeks then she is weaned already. The biggest thing you need to worry about is just making sure she is eating often

Well, yea I guess you are right...so let me rephrase the whole thing... Rascal isnt eating any type of puppy food...only boiled chicken. The only way he eats pup food is when i mush it together and then he picks the chicken out! So how do I get him to eat JUST puppy food? I have tried all kinds, even the puppy Hills Rx I/D and he walks away from it! And should I feed him 3x a day or try and get him to eat every 2-3 hours until bedtime??

| Welcome to you and Rascal Congratulations on your new baby. I am sorry that you are having a rough start to being a Yorkie parent. For tonight I would feed him small bits of chicken every 2 - 3 hours. Since you have already had a problem with hypoglocemia, I would not let him go more than 4 or 5 hours without eating. Your little Rascal is very young and very small, so you don't want him to go without eating for very long. You might boil some rice (brown is best) or pop a potato in the microwave and mix the chicken with the rice or potato to give him some complex carbs. You might want to find a high quality puppy kibble and start by mixing a small amount of kibble in warm water mush it all up and add bits of chicken, gradually reducing the amount of chicken and increasing the amount of kibble until you can stop adding the chicken. OR.... you could take the plunge and just home cook for him. There is a huge amount of information here from those of us who home cook - if you do a search on home cooking a ton of info will show up. Good luck, Neighbor. |

I will continue to wake up tonite to feed him. The vet told me to do it 24 hours and this morning made the 24 hour mark, but I want to be FOR ABSOLUTELY SURE he is out of the danger for another hypoglycemic episode. That was very very scary. I thought he was gone. And I will NOT let that happen. Happy New Year!

| I think you're doing a fantastic job! Good for you saving this little puppies life. I can understand the stress that you are feeling, I had troubles with my Missy having hypoglycemia when she first came home at 7 weeks old. As far as feeding him chicken, I think as long as he's eating that's GREAT. You can work on weaning him to some softened kibble or what not in a couple of days. You may want to research foods at this link Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost From what I can tell Pedigree food is only rated at 1 star, you want to aim for a higher rated food if you can. I feed Go Natural, it's rated 6 stars.

| Hi, Congrat's on your new little one. It sounds like you are doing good already. But I know you feel so unsure at how little he is eating, and if he is getting enough nutrients from it. I have been where you are a few times with some very picky pups. What I did was get Gerber's chicken sticks for human babies. I would soften a quality kibble in hot water, and once it was soft...I would mash a baby chicken stick and mix it with the soft kibble. They love the taste of the chicken but can't pick just the chicken pieces out. This may just work on your little Rascal. If this does not work, and you have tried everything else...PM me for the name of a soft food that seem's to work for me everytime. When I get really desperate...I try this food and it usually gets them eating and gaining weight. I really don't want to mention it here...as I might be tar and feathered and chased out.

| Hi there and Welcome to YT ! Congradultaions on your new baby. He so very tiny though and young. SO your going to have to work extra hard for a month or so to keep him healthy. YES, it is very important to feed him ever couple of hrs. Just to advoid a HYPO eposoide. Be sure to not over due any quick changes in diet, because it could upset his tiny stomach. Since he really likes the chicken then mix it with rice or potato. make sure he will drink water for you as well.

| Rascal did really good last nite. fed him at 10pm, 2am, and 6am and after his 6am feeding I gave him 2cc of N-Cal. He is playing, exploring, and his poop is normal. No more runny poop! So now today I will keep trying to get him to eat plain canned food. Thanks for the advice! |
