| Hunting and eating bugs What about this bug hunting thing? It seems dangerous to me. There are brown recluse and black widow spiders here, the tarantellas will be migrating soon (saw one a few days ago), red wasps, and who knows what else. However, I can't deny that a cricket can provide fun for a very long time. For that matter, what about snakes. We have a magnificent container garden on one of the decks, but I'm afraid to let Susan go out there, first because it's too high (nine steps off the ground), but also because we've seen lots of salamanders hiding in the containers and there could be snakes also. Our son killed a copperhead and a pygmy rattler not far from here last summer. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | My girls LOVE chasing bugs, it is their favorite past time...but we are all very careful to watch what they are going after...we don't have that many dangerous bugs out here but we do have wasps and bees and spiders and we try to really watch and keep them under control...because they can be very dangerous to our little ones!! But I agree that a cricket is not going to harm them, it is very entertaining, I just don't like the idea of them eating it but hey as long as it is not me!!

| Brody LOVES chasing bugs. He eats a locust a day - literally. However, his bug chasing habits got him stung in the mouth by a wasp once. But now he remembers the sound of that buzzing, and he stays away completely. Its amazing really. Yesterday he was trying to play with an extremely large horse fly (the biting kind) and it was buzzing around and I kinda freaked out and I said "BRODY! Yucky!" and he came running back to me and hid behind my legs. So if they get hurt once, they learn. However, Brody was lucky because he didn't have an allergic reaction to the wasp sting. Brody also chases and eats snakes and lizards. One time he brought a little snake into my house! I freaked out. And I had to get it away from him because I didn't know if its poisonous or not. It was not fun.

| Ugh! Funny I should find this thread. I've been having this same problem with Carlee. I'm trying to teach her that going outside is just a bathroom thing, not a playground and she constantly digs up cricket's. I must really be a sight outside following my Yorkie around with a spray bottle!

| Yeah, Brody spends A LOT of time outside so he has plenty of time to hunt bugs. It makes him so happy though.

| Sabrina thinks taking care of bugs is her JOB. I live in south texas and we do have bugs. She chases them all. She's gotten red wasps, yellow jackets, saved me literally from a scorpion, moths, bees - only a couple of times has she gotten stung and I gave her benadryl. If I say "where's the bug, Brina?" off she goes hunting, in the house or outside. She's so funny. Only one salamander made it into the house. She brought it to me and I put it out. She caught a lizards tail and played with it for hours. She acts so proud when she catches something - that's the terrier in them I guess. Ha. |

| At our old house it was by the woods and it had snakes in the yard. Bridget used to catch them and kill them. I called and found out that they were the kind that couldn't hurt her unless she had a reaction to the bite. Needless to say it FREAKED me out! I hate snakes and I would be screaming for my husband every time she got one as she is running around the yard with it. The first time I thought it was a stick and was like aww look at them all playing with the stick..until I relized it was a limp stick! I think she got a total of four while we were there. Thank goodness we moved!

| A neighbor a few houses from me had a little yorkie, probably 3 pounds (I'm guessing) and that little guy caught and killed a little baby rabbit!

| i have been wondering about them eating bugs and lizzards. I have been afraid one of mine is going to catch one of those lizzards. I thought they would poison them. I am in south texas also and they are everywhere. I can't find any where on a search about what bugs are dangerous to them.

| So far, Sabrina has had no problems with catching bugs except a scorpion. Her little lip swelled. I gave her bendryl. BUT BEWARE FROGS AND TOADS. I've nearly lost 3 little dogs to them - they have a toxin in their skin causes major diarehea, vomiting, seizures - take them immediately to vet. Can kill them my vet said. She is the proud hunter/killer of red wasps, yellow jackets, roaches, lightening bugs, flies and moths. And one lizard, one gekko, one scorpion. Quite the little hunters we have here. Most fun? lizard tails. |
