| Sorry in advance, but - Does anyone express anal glands? I just got off the phone with the vet and they think Baxter needs his anal glands expressed. They said they could teach me but I'm thinking this is a job better done at the vet's. Does anyone do this themselves? I had a pomeranian for 13 years and never even knew what an anal gland was. This dog is teaching us so much and not all of it is fun!! |

| Yes I have but I can only do it externally with Ellie. Her "area" is too small for my finger and I don't want to hurt her. I would have them teach you. It isn't that bad.

| I learned "the hard way" too. The problem I had ... I let a vet that I only took Toto to for a little physical to get a "Flight certificate" when I was going to fly with her. We had not been in CO long enough to find a reputable vet so just picked one out of the phone book. The idiot expressed her little glands and in doing so, bruised them! We found an excellent vet and I won't let anyone else touch her. I'm sure there are experienced groomers who know the correct way, but I am just much more trusting of her vet. Besides, he does it and bathes her little rear and she doesn't need a bath when we get home! That stuff smells terrible!!

| Also don't do this just for the sake of doing it. Most dogs with normal poops empty them on their own. Some groomers do this without asking and then it becomes necessary to do it all the time. If they are having trouble let the vet show you the proper way |

| I only allow my vet to express the glands. If they are expressed incorrectly they can burst inside setting up infection, and even requiring surgery. |
