| Is My Yorkie to Thin I have a 5 1/2 month old yorkie, Name is Willie. He is around 10" tall from floor to shoulder. He weigh's 6 1/2 lbs. When I bath him he looks so skinny,I feel sorry for him and feed him more. He will eat any and everything in front of him, and I follow the package, but he is so hungry all the time. Is he ok for his height? Thank you so much. I will put a picture up as soon as I get it on the computer. Patches |

| I doubt that Willie is too thin. Our two always look so tiny when they're wet, but they each see the vet at least a couple of times a year for routine checks, and the vet says they're in great shape. Meggie (our younger one) is like Willie. She would eat ANYTHING, ANYTIME. We only feed them their own food, they eat three small meals a day, and they don't get treats, except for training treats - and those are tiny (a single Cheerio, for example). She always acts like she's hungry but if anything, she might be a few ounces overweight. She just LOVES to eat. |

| You can't go by weight alone...you have to take into consideration the bone size and build of the dog. 6 1/2 pounds will look different from one dog to another...some are normally stockier and some are built more lean. If you can feel bones you're o.k. but if you can see them then yes, your Yorkie is too thin. |

| You should be able to, somewhat, feel his ribs when you rub your hands on his side. Here is Boo in his summer cut. I too, think he looks too thin, but he's actually been at this weight, 10 lbs, for 2 years. I think the way his black marking goes higher in his flank area makes it an optical illusion to make him look thinner. The 2nd pic is him, at the same weight but in all his winter woolie glory.

| Hair has so much to do with it! I give my Sophie a bath and she looks like a drowned rat! She looses half her size it seems. The vet says she is good though (she has food out all the time and eats only a little here and there). My larger dog is a bit over weight she will eat what she can get her paws on! We have to monitor her eating and she too seems hungry all the time, we were worried about it and the vet said she was actually over weight by 5 or so pounds and she was just very good at guilt trips! They are so much like real children its funny!

| I think Boo is just adorable, I guess I am just a worried mother. LOL. He is going to be bigger than normal, he is 8.5 lbs now, at just over 6 months old, but he is just so cute, and lovable, I would love him regarless. Thanks for the answers and pictures. I love seeing all the pretty babies. I don't know how to upload a picture yet, but maybe I will figure it out. |

| Just remember a bit underweight is better then overweight. All my yorkies tended to gain lots more weight after one year of age |

| Don't worry I have a 2 1/2 year old yorkie, named Gypsy that IS SUPER SKINNY. It is just her body type. Her mom is like that too. We laugh and call her the Claudia Schiffer of dogs. She makes are other "normal body type" yorkie look like a porker--even thought technically Gypsy weighs more the Prissy. Do add insult to injury, I had their hair cut really short last weekend because they were getting spayed and I wanted to make sure that they would be the cleanest as possible. Remember, dogs have different body types, as do people. So unless you notice a drastic weight loss in your yorkie and he has regular check up at the vets, then you don't need to worry about it. |

| Baxter is 6.5 lbs and 10 inches tall at 12 months. He seems skinny too. But he eats well and exercises a lot. He's at the vet today and when I pick him up I plan to ask about the weight issue. |

| Check out: Understanding Your Dog's Body Condition | Purina.com . This chart gives you an idea of what a dog ought to look like (under all the hair!) A BCS of 4 or 5 is best. Most dogs fall into the 6 or 7 range, since Americans in particular have a somewhat bloated image of what a dog should look like.
